My son's buck

The 7-30 Waters Contender carbine did it again. My son used it with the Barnes 120 Grain triple shock to take a big mulie Sunday evening.       It was the third day of the hunt and his brother, my brother and I had already shot our deer.This buck and a doe took off running up a ridge in a burn around 200 yards away from us. I let out a LOUD "baaa baaa"  as the wind was blowing pretty good. He stopped and she kept running, my son says "I'm shooting".  I looked over and saw that I was to close to the muzzle. I moved back and he shot that fast I was trying to get him back in my binoculars but it was to late. By the time I saw him he was on the ground with a broken back. My 270 doesn't knock them down any better than the 7-30 . The buck is a 3x4 and big by Arizona standards. My oldest son and I have bull elk tags for later this month so it was important to me that he get his deer. We all got nice bucks but my youngest was bigger than his brother's and mine. He sure is happy with that!

Nice buck, Elwood! Nothing wrong w/a 7-30 Waters.  It obviously gets the job done well. I would be extremely happy with a buck like that! Best of luck w/your elk hunting. Please post pictures if you score.

Since I am assuming you probably took part in the field dressing of the buck, tell us a bit about the terminal performance of the 120 Barnes when you get a chance.

The hit was a spine shot with a exit. Plenty of damage but, a ordinary bullet would do the same. Last year he hit a small buck facing us, with the same load at 50 yards. The bullet intered the front of the chest, destroyed a lung, broke the shoulder blade the long way, broke three ribs before exiting the paunch well back. The bullet then entered the thigh, destroyed the femur at the ball socket came to rest just under the skin on the back of the thigh. The slug looked like a X-bullet advertisement. No missing petals. Peeled all the way down. Just perfect.
