  Romney (Elaine Thompson/AP)A new story from the Los Angeles Times reveals one major way Mitt Romney's past record on illegal immigration contradicts his current rhetoric: His Massachusetts health care plan aids illegal immigrants.
Romney signed the state's health care overhaul into law when he was governor, in 2006. The law includes a Health Safety Net program, which provides medical care for undocumented immigrants and other uninsured residents of Massachusetts.
"Uninsured, poor immigrants can walk into a health clinic or hospital in the state and get publicly subsidized care at virtually no cost to them, regardless of their immigration status," writes LA Times reporter Noam N. Levey. Representatives of the Romney campaign told the newspaper that Romney never intended for the Health Safety Net to support undocumented immigrants. But officials involved in the legislation disagreed with that characterization, saying the language does not bar undocumented immigrants from receiving care.
At last week's debate in Nevada, Texas Gov. Rick Perry dredged up a years-old controversy over illegal immigrants who worked for a lawn care service Romney used at his Belmont, Mass. home. Perry once again branded Romney as a supporter of amnesty for illegal immigrants.
And in recent days, Romney has attempted to turn that around on Perry, accusing the Texas governor of supporting education aid for "anchor babies," children of undocumented immigrants.

if Newt is in the primary, he gets my vote.  I've known him since 1980 when I was his photographer.
as a person, he's a jerk, but he WOULD try to extend the constitution to unborn babies and try to overturn roe vs wade.

I am not defending Romney, but I think that Romney devised the Health Safety Net to prevent the cost of individual care from rising due to the fact that many people go to the hospital ER to get care, and then skip out on the bill.  It is a law called EMTALA that gives people the opportunity to get healthcare, and never have to pay for it.    Romney provided a way for providers to get reimbursement for care.  No such proviso exists in Obamacare.

I am not in any way defending Romney or Romneycare.  I merely offered my opinion that the intention of the safety net as a means of defraying increased healthcare costs of all the deadbeats that skip out on their bill after they receive care.  That uis the whole reason there should be a repeal of EMTALA right after Obamacare is destroyed.

I think you are confusing an honest businessman with an illegal Kenyan Muslim thatched-hut-village organizer that has absolutely nothing but hatred for this country.  Romney at least tried to address healthcare costs, and all the liberal messiah, but more likely, false prophet, has done nothing but enact a law that would make honest Americans pay more for depreciated quality of care, while all of his illegal buddies continue to get free care at the expense of the American citizenry.  There is also the issue of the IPABs, you know, the evil "death panels".......

Even though you guys are on opposite sides of this issue, you BOTH confuse me.  Since when has the "HC costs" NOT come out of "the general American public's wallet"?  We all pay for everyones healthcare one way or another; through our work, insurance payments, taxes, or bankruptcy due to uncovered medical bills etc.  Death panels is also confusing, since to me what diffence does it make if a "Govt. Insurer" say they won't pay for something or a "Private Insurer" says they won't pay.  Either way, you have the option of spending your own $250,000 to $1 Million to have the treatment.  Oh...you don't have the $250,000, well then you are dead either way.  Healthcare is already rationed in this country, those with the most money and influence get the best care.  Check out the Congressional Health Plan, I'll take that anyday.  I had a guy who retired from HP, his insurance covered NONE of our treatment (it is medical treatment, not quackery) - but Medicare covers it along with most other policies, just not this "plan"?
