2011 Vermont moose season
« on: October 22, 2011, 11:56:51 AM »
I guided on two hunts this year, both in D1. First hunt we scored at 1:30 on day 1 with a 838 lb, 61", 15 pt bull. My two hunters were first time moose hunters. They missed a smaller bull at 7:00 that mornng that I called in to 75 yards. As they say, things happen for a reason and we found bull #2 stillhunting the edge of a clearcut. On Wednesday I was out with a friend, just he and I, no second shooter. He's a much more experienced hunter but hadn't seen a moose since Saturday when he passed up a small 4 pt. At 5:50 we came across a good bull as we were headed for the truck across a huge clearcut. 4 shots later we had him down, 619 lbs, 36", 10 pts. Great season, can't wait 'til next year!

A nice looking moose.  If I ever get a bull tag here in Ontario, I should get you to do the calling for me. ;) 8)

Those weights you quoted - were they "at-the-butcher" weights or hanging (field dressed) weights?  If they're hanging weights I'd expect it to be a little higher for such a nice looking animal.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!
Don't mix the two!

Thanks Rick.  Those weights are field dressed, completely empty.  The hanging weight on the one in the picture, 838lbs field dressed, was 690lbs for the 4 quarters and neck.  I wouldn't be opposed to a trip north of the border someday!

Very nice! Thanks for sharing photos.

What caliber was being used?

Fun to be in on 2 good hunts for sure.
