Gas
« on: April 26, 2011, 07:53:31 PM »
Well, today I took the bike out for first ride of the season. was driving along and was running low on gas, so I started to look for a gas station and didn't run into one, so I ran out of gas ad had to walk about 10 miles to the nearest town. I was wondering what everyone else does for long trips. If you carry extra gas, or what not.

I don't carry extra but start looking once I get under a half tank. Yes, I've run out of gas a couple times too.

You got to plan ahead on long rides but most places it's no problem. Why didn't you top it off if you were going to ride where there were no towns?  ;)

Was going about 100 miles each way, had about 3/4 of a tank, thought I had enough to go one way. Just guessed wrong.

yers ago i had a couple of choppers, a triumph with a peanut tank and gas drinkin harley shovel with a 3.5 gal fatbob tank.niether had any kind of odometer or speedometer.i jus got used to keepn them full.i have been in places tho, mostly in the dakotas where if yu didnt know the country yu had better be carrying at least a quart of gas.does your bike not have a reserve setting on the petcock?ive seen very few bikes you could not get at least 30 miles on reserve.my problem was always forgettin to switch bak to the main tank when filling up after i was on reserve. THAT will bite yu in the butt!

If you have fuel injection, you may not have a petcock or a reserve area in your tank, even if you put a petcock on it.

My Goldwing holds 6.1 gal of gas and one time on a long road trip riding west through Nevada with another couple on a HD RoadKing we stopped at a Harley shop and forgot to fill up when we left town.  When we got to the next town I had a half gallon and the harley had a quart of gas left.  I really watch the gas guage more carefully now.  My GW will run about 35 miles after the low fuel light comes on.  I have only ran out of gas once with a bike, that was about 35 years ago and I had forgot to reset the fuel petcock to the main setting.  I had to buy gas from a farmer for about twice the going price but didn't argue with him at all.

My '09 Vulcan has a 5.3 gal tank, "low fuel" light comes on after 4.5 gallons (200 miles) never crowded past 220 miles, but could probably make 230 if I was watching gas usage for the entire tank.  I start looking for gas at about 180 miles though.

Went to sturgis this past august and had a 1 gal can on the back with everything else. Stopped at one point to fuel up and another rider came up to me and asked what the can was for, I asked him if he ever ran out, he said no. Told him I had and a couple older ridders started laughing, Made having it a little better.

On long trips, I have carried extra fuel and it came in handy. I used empty quart motor oil bottles. They have the best durability for petroleum distilates. Three of them filled with gasoline can easily be stored and they don't take up too much space. I can fit one in my windshield bag and one in each saddle bag. Those three quarts can get me another 20 miles or more on my Heritage.

When traveling on long trips across country on my Goldwing, i always carried a gallon of gas strapped on top of one of the saddle bags...

Once on a Sportster i had, i was low on gas, but i knew of a gas station ahead in a "pass" i had to go through.  What i didn't know was, it had closed up!  That left me on fumes inbetween towns!  Then i spotted a load of firewood on a pickup, so i looked it over and saw a chainsaw and can of gas!  I looked and looked until i found the owner and bought some chainsaw gas at a VERY high price!
