max load of triple 7 question?
« on: January 07, 2004, 05:23:37 PM »
what would the max load be for a Knight rifle that is rated to 150gr. of powder.i am now shooting 3 - 50gr pellets of pyrodex with good results and i wanted to go to the triple 7.i do have some now and have shot it at 100grs.what i am thinking is to work up a load using the triple 7 loose powder and useing it from now on.i have heard to reduce the loads by 10% from some and also to reduce by 15%.what would the max be?

i think the triple 7 is the way to go if i can find the right load.when you are shooting premo bullets and pellets the price per shot is getting up there.it would be much cheaper in the long run useing the loose powder and i would still have a top performing muzzle loader

Knight is pretty straightforward about it-- their current production Disc Extreme and Elites will burn 120-125 grains of T 7 FFg. That is one hot load. Measuring by volume, I get better accuracy with T 7 FFFg, not because I think it is more accurate-- but just because I can measure the smaller particles better in my powder measure.

Some of the literature suggests that it takes a 10 grain difference in blackpowder to make a "significant" difference. Maybe. Not with Triple 7-- 5 grains can sure change the numbers on a chrono. :bye:

randy, thanks for the input.you too little red i read those posts.my Knight Big Horn has the 26 inch barrel and its has the new FULL PLASTIC JACKET IGNITION SYSTEM. i hope this gun will shoot good close to max, like i said it does with the 3 pyr pellets.

what kind of speed are people getting with 120 or 125gr of loose triple 7 with a 220gr bullet?it must be close to 2000fps.i dont have a chrono my self but a friend has one that i could use sometime

The 40 / 50 220 DC has been accurate in my Knights to 105 T7 FFg max, which is a 2080 fps load, approximately.

thanks Randy,i think i will try the 220 and some 200gr DC bullets.my knight didnt like the red hot bullets in 180 and 200 gr.it started shooting good once i hit the 220gr bullet and up to 300gr expander.i would like to shoot a good performing bullet at max or close to max FPS.the light red hot bullets are 45cal so they are real short.i think that is why they dont shoot good.with the dead centers is see they are 40cal so the light bullets will have some length to them i a think they will shoot good out of my rifle.dropping back to a 200 or 220 gr bullet will reduce the felt recoil some too.that will be a big pluss also.

Max fps and less recoil don't exactly go hand-in-hand. I've always seen groups open up with Dead Centers past 2100 fps, so the loads I use are 2025 - 2075 range. Even that, with a 240 grain bullet, is a quite healthy load.

After spending some $8000 on a caribou hunt, the owner of Dead Center bullets personally rewarded me by buying me an egg roll after dropping a couple of tasty bulls with his bullets.

The exceedingly kind and embarrassingly generous man that Cecil Epp is, I believe he will likely bestow the coveted Egg Roll Award to anyone that does the same. Book your flight to Winnipeg right away to claim this prestigious high honor of dubious distinction.

Cabelas does send a bullet pusher with each order. I bought to try them out before I bought the bulk bullets. It is a shame that they are so expensive to buy and try out without ordering 250. Randy what weight do you find the greatest accuracy with out of the savage?
Thanks

The 40 / 240, the 45 / 300, and the 45, 340 are all sub- 1" . . . so, it is hard for me to tell the difference between the three (the .40 / 220, .44 / 300s did not do nearly as well).

With smokeless, the 240 and 300s shoot at very close to the same velocity, both are pleasant to shoot. The 340 gets a little stout with faster loads, is a small bit harder to seat with more bearing surface, and hardly seems required unless Alaskan moose or brown bear are on the menu.

So, for the time being anyway, the .45 / 50 300 DC looks to be ideal.

That is good to hear because I ordered the 45/300 before the year end deal was up and 250 at that. Thanks for the update.

Cecil has his "load development special" going on right now, for those who want to try something different.
