Bushmaster AR .357 Magnum
« on: May 29, 2012, 11:13:25 AM »
I was thumbing through a picture book on rifles in a store recently and ran across this picture of what was described as a .357 Magnum Bushmaster AR rifle.  Does anyone know if these have existed?
‎Is it really Zombie Max, if it's not .357 Max?

Yea I'd say someone really screwed up on the caption. Never seen nor heard of a 357mag AR. Even if that was the mag is all wrong.  A 357 mag would not feed from a regular AR mag to short. :o

I for one would love to have one if they were actually made.  But like has been said above, I would consider it a toy until proven otherwise because I really think the rimmed round would create a feeding nightmare as far as the magazine goes.  Having said that, I disagree with the statement above about the magazine being wrong in the picture just due to the fact that the magazine is long and wide enough, but would require some form of insert which would act as the true magazine, while the standard AR mag body would just basically be an adapter to make sure the internal magazine was in the correct place for feeding.  I think this would be an interesting concept, and doable, kind of along the lines of the Coonan Cadet 1911 in .357.  Doable, but more of a playtoy with inherent limitations and problems that would limit it to range toy or hunting rifle status, at least in my book.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RRDWTWD3r0 I don't think this ever came to fruition with a magazine.

There was a fellow that was working on a rimless 357 mag. It started out with reforming 223 brass, but I think there was a case capacity issue or something similar. I am pretty sure it was scrapped but the page is still up. http://www.ar15barrels.com/prod/357rm.shtml
Last I heard this was what he came up with. http://www.ar15barrels.com/prod/357auto.shtml I have no idea if he is still making them.

Of coarse there is the 357 sig and 10 mm for comparable power of a 357 mag round.

Or you could use a 9mm Magnum case - just about as long as the body of a 357 mag case but without the rim.  If you want to use a 223 case as a basis for a 357 magnum level semi-auto then look to the old 351 Winchester Self-Loading round as a base for both operating pressures and cartridge capability.  If you want to use a Kalashnikov platform rather than the AR platform, turn the 7.62x39mm round into a 40 like the old Winchester 401 Self-Loading.  Just a thought....

357 AMP works well with very simple modifications to the gun and magazines.  Problem is, there is no factory ammo.

Go with the 10mm if you want something like that. Olympic Arms already has one available.
