45-70 and Unique

Hey all, I have some questions. I have noticed some of the guys talking about loading the 45-70 with unique. Seems like most of them are talking about using cast bullets. I have most of a pound of unique and a bunch of remington 405 grn jsp. Wondering if any of you guys have loaded jacketed bullets up with unique. And are you just loading plinker loads or do any of you load up a good hunting load with unique? I don't need to do it, I have a bunch of 4198 and Varget, (varget is sooooo dirty though!) I just figured, what the hell, I have the stuff, might as well try something new. Thanks for any info.

Since I have a pile of SR4759 I had to try some 45-70s. I load Remington 405 JSP to about 1500 fps, a fun one to ring a gong with! I am going to try some Trailboss next, shoulder is getting old and tender.

There is data out there for unique in the 45-70, and it works well enough, but it leaves an awful lot of airspace in the case.

Specifically to your question, Jacketed bullets and Unique isn't really a great idea depending on barrel length.  Most loads you will see it with are for cast, because cast doesn't drag in rifling as much.  It can be done just be careful of a bullet still in the bore due to increased drag.  8)

My Lyman Manual suggest 11.00-15.00 grains of Unique under a Remington 405 grain Jacketed bullet.  Velocity is given as 890-1223 fps.  Pressures are in the Trapdoor safe category.  Air space is a non-issue.  The upper end load would duplicate Remington factory velocity.
