Just got a model 600
« on: January 16, 2012, 03:56:03 PM »
35 years ago, we took a family friend hunting. He wasn't a big hunter, but said he had a rifle. The gun he brought was a model 600, 6.5 rem mag. At the time I was about 12, and thought that it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. Every time I've seen him since then, I have asked about that rifle. Last week, after my father's funeral, that same friend told me that he still had "the gun". Yesterday he GAVE it to me along with a 100 rounds of ammo. I am so stoked. He bought the gun new, around 1968 or so, from Gibson's and it even has a Gibson's scope on it. I'd say it's about 98% with only a couple of scuffs on the stock. I plan on putting a better scope on it and getting it ready to hunt, but it won't see any serious action. Now I'm already thinking that I may want to try to find it's twin in .350 rem. mag.

MS10point,
Very interesting, I bought a Mod 600 at Gibson`s either in 1966 or 1967 in Shreveport, La. Mine  was in the .308 Win and I still have it! Killed many deer with it!
Great rifle for stand shooting or heavy thicket situations. Good thing about the little carbine you can set it up as a scout rifle which works great!

I have a 600 chambered in 6mmRem that I bought off my son a few years ago.  I have killed two deer with it but I am going to use it as a coyote killer in future.  Mine is a comemerative edition, I believe the Montana, or is it Wyoming?, bi-centenial.  It is in decent shape and shoots well, but certainly not collector grade by any stretch of the imagination.

MS10point...Sorry to hear about your dad.

You must have a very generous friend.  Very nice rifle and an amazing caliber.  Not an easy combination to find.  About a perfect woods gun for whitetail deer.

Hooray for you.Get the 350 mag. and make the match. You won't be sorry. And forget about the old wives tales about recoil & muzzles blast. Been shootin one for too many years. Heck, they are only a 06 capacity case in a short action. Love the 600's.

Sorry to hear about your Dad.

I bought my Rem 600 about 30+ years ago from a part time gun dealer in town that was going out of business. It was still in his back room and still in the factory box ( still have the box in my attic ). It was a 222 mfg 1964.

I love the looks of that little carbine with the VR and the short barrel. The only downfall was the plastic trigger guard. They do make a replacement metal trigger guard but it's pricey.

Bought the wife a Mohawk 600 back around 1972, give or take.   Carters Country up North of Houston ran them for $103 with a 4x Weaver scope mounted.  I had the stock fitted for her and she carried it on one of our hog hunts just a couple weeks ago.

Excellent shooter.  Is a .243  The Grandkids fight over it.
