45-70 BC hunting loads

Now that I have my BC back from H&R. I have two weeks till opening day of deer season. I want to use 405 Rem. over IMR 4198, Never used a 405, before and the gun has a new barrel and I don't have much time. I could use some ideas.

Well Jimbob, I don't use H4198, but Hodgedon's load data for a 400 gr. should be a good starting point.  ;)

I use Reloader7 as I have had nothing but stellar results from it and it's quite inexpensive here.  Using that I'd try about 45 gr. starting level w/ max at 49gr. and work up until good accuracy and comfortable.  You can go down as low as 35gr. for trap door level loads if you want some light ones too.  ;)

And just to give you some confidence inspiring words, "it is really hard to make a load that does not work in a 45-70"!

That 48 grains will loosen you dentures.
 
I use 30.3 grains of IMR 4198 under a 400 grain JSP Speer bullet.
 
Accurate and easy on the shoulder load.
 
Personally I don't care for a lot of recoil, and 1500 fps is about my max when it comes to big heavy bullets, but 1200 to 1500 fps. is plenty for deer using a 405 grain bullet.

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

I've killed two animals this year with 35 grn of IMR 4198 behind the 405 rem. A 200lb+ black bear and a whitetail doe. Complete pass through on both animals. They don't have to go fast or hurt your shoulder.
