Boy, you got me on that one. I was expecting you to be meeting someone famous, like Atllaw!

I hear you there Steel , But the Gunny makes for a nice second!

He was real down to earth, we talked about the rifle I was reloading for my foreman and he asked about the caliber "30-06 is there really any other option" ( this is the first rifle my foreman has bought since he got home from Vietnam) And the Gunny mentioned that it was adequate for pretty much ever type of game on our continent, I added that it would handle alot in Africa too.. We then spoke about his first trip to Africa ( he used an 06) .
He was kind enough to not only autograph a picture for my father ( a Vietnam vet) but my shop foreman ( A Marine Vietnam vet) and while we were taking the pics I mention my cousins wife over by my wife and that her pic was going to be sent to my cousin that was off at specialized traing at this time and couldnt make it , He asked me what his name was and signed another for my cuz.
Like I said a real down to earth man . I also noted while waiting to see him that if a vet showed up to meet R. Lee , they were escourted to the front of the line... He even had the young Marines cadet ROTC show up and sound off for him ....

Saturday was a good day for me guys , Not many people of the famous variety interest me , little lone going out of my way to meet them , But the Gunny is one that I would and did , I couldnt be happier about the experience.

My daughter is a Marine and she always attends all the Marine Balls. Last year she met Gunny  and Had him autograph "her" while having her picture taken. She was wearing an off the shoulder, Low cut ball gown and told the Gunny to "use what ever area is available. Now, My da is a rather Largely endowed young lady and Dear old Gunny used the front to both sides of the cleavage with indelible majic marker ( a sharpie). She said that she had that autograph on her for almost a month. ;D She stated that he is one heck of a nice guy (for a Marine :o ) ( couldn't help that--I Army :D ). Got the pictures on one of my hard drives here and will have to try to find them. God Bless to all.

I'm sure it was very special, but I have no idea who this Gunny fellow is.  With a name like that he sounds like a jar head.  ;D

Winter Hawk ,

Gunny as he is lovingly reffered to is a Marine indeed and has played a number of roles on film and hosts a few t.v. shows ( Mail-Call and Locked and Loaded come to mind) his most known for role was in Stanley Kubrik's 1987 movie Full Metal Jacket, He was the born hard drill intructor Sgt. Hartman. He also had a role as the  Chief/ Capt. in the movie Se7en ( Seven) along side Brad Pitt , Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey.

And like Goofy's daughter pointed out , He is a real nice guy, Real down to earth and not at any point did he get in a rush to run people on through to get the day over and done... Am Glad I got to meet the man.

Ah, now I see.  And Austin from NC, no, I don't watch TV and I haven't seen a movie in probably 15 years.  Duh!

Way back when I was in the Navy, our ship (USS Philip, DD-498) was used in filming "Harm's Way".  In the movie it's the USS Cassidy, a destroyer.  We had a ton of actors and film crew people on board, including Slim Pickens.  He was the only one who would even talk to us peons.  When he wasn't filming, he was B.S.ing with the crew.  Your Gunny sounds very much the gentleman like Mr. Pickens was.  It's too bad there aren't more like him.

A talented character actor known for his military roles, R. Lee Ermey was in the US Marine Corps for 11 years. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant, and later was bestowed the honorary rank of Gunnery Sergeant by the Marine Corps, after he served 14 months in Vietnam and later did 2 tours in Okinawa...

also a little know role of his was the helicoptor pilot in apocalypse now.
