H110 powder

The Hornady fourth edition reloading manual lists the maximum H110 powder limit of 15.8 grains for the 158 grain flat point bullet in .357 magnum.    The Hodgdon website lists the max grains for this as being 16.7 grains.   Which should be trusted?

Neither.  These should be just a guide.  Back off at least three grains and work up.  Watch for pressure signs, and stop well short of either max if you can get the accuracy you are looking for...JMO

Just keep in mind that H110 and W296 can't be reduced more than 3%.
I go with 16.5gr of H110 and 158gr. XTP's in my 357 Handi. It's very accurate.

Hornady max loads normally run lower than other manuals.  H110 should not be reduced by more than 3% max (it likes to be pushed.)  It has a narrow loading window.  3% of 16.7 is only .5 grs.  Personally I'd start around 15.5 grs. and work up from there, looking for both accuracy and pressure signs.  Use a magnum primer.

Powder manufacturers are constantly checking their powder lots. New data for new lots trumps old lot data. It has been noted several times that new production powders should not be used with old data. IIRC, those admonition used to be to compare load data from 3 sources and never start at max.
My first check would be with the powder manufacturer.

Hornady lists the following, (7th edition)
 
HDY 158gr XTP bullet.
H 110 Start: 12.7gr WSPM primer
H 110 Max: 15.6gr WSPM primer

I am currently loading 14.5 for my loads with this bullet.  It's strange that some loadings give the 3%, while others give quite a range..........????
 
When I get a minute, I'm going to go back over my manuals and update my load book,
 
I'm assuming your flatpoint may have a different cannalure and seating depth..

Hodgdon lists 15 gr as the start load for the Hornady XTP. The FP seats the same as the HP. I load XTPs all the time @ 15 gr for the range.......very accurate and pleasant to shoot. For hunting I will bump it up 3/4s of a grain. This is outta a coupla 686s and a lever carbine.

Youre right!  Strange as seein it says right on the bottle "Reduce by 3% to start."

Start with the Hornady data if you're using their bullet, then if you're feeling good about what is going on when you get to the 15.8 then go ahead and work on up to the Hogdon data.
With H110 as long as you're getting the bullet base in contact with the powder and using a stout crimp, it shouldn't give you any squibs.

I am also loading 357 max, 180gr. XTP's over 19gr. H110.  Not nearly a full case, but shoots excellent.  I must have shot 300 or more of these.
 
Sometimes it's hard to know which data to trust....
