Remington 30-30 ammo : 170 grain hollow tip
« on: July 18, 2011, 08:28:09 AM »

Since the early 1970's, I've tried just about every brand and bullet weight in our 30-30 carbines.  Had great luck with performance of Winchester 170 grain Power Point.  But never hunted with this unique hollow tip ammo by Remington.  Have you ever tried it?  Impressions: accuracy, size of wound channel, penetration?

Thanks for your input.

As a teenager I used to Indian up on groundhogs in mid-Missouri creek bottoms using a M94 and 150 gr. HP ammo (brand?).  It shot very well and obviously was effective on my quarry.  I wouldn't hesitate to use 170 gr. HP from Remington on antelope, whitetail, and mule deer.  It wouldn't be my choice for elk.

The boxes of .32 Special 170gr HP RPCL says it is made for deeper penetration.  I purchased 1500 30-30 HP RPCL component bullets
and worked up loads in Savage 99 300 Savage.  One of the most accurate bullets in my 99 to date @ 2500fps.  Ain't killed nothing yet with em but they sure do shoot.  The HP .32 Special RPCL are darn near a spitzer shape and the tip of them sits right on the primer.  I got the box when my FIL passed away.  He made his longest shot ever on a deer with one of those factory loads.

It was a measured 237yds.  A bang flop too.  I did
play with the 170gr RPRNCL HP bullets in my 30-30's but the Hornady FTX 160gr factory loads shoot so darn good I have using them
for my 30-30's and my .32 Specials.  Regards, 336SC
