Marlin 981T finally shooting good.
« on: November 06, 2011, 11:55:40 AM »
I have a Marlin 981T that I bought new back in 2004.  It never would shoot better than 2" at 50 yards.  While looking at the crown a while back I noticed the crown had a chamfer on one side but not the other.  So I re-crowned it with a button head screw and grinding compound followed by lapping compound.  Groups dropped to 1" at 50 yards with 3 out of 5 touching.  This is using a 4X scope.

Sweet idea.  8)  I have one old single shot Marlin 15Y buckaroo, which has never been too consistent.  Maybe I'll check it's crown.  Never thought of that, just figured it to be a plinker for the younguns hehe

It's worth a look.  This was only a $130 gun that had been flooded so it wasn't worth much.  So I did it myself.  There are a lot of write ups on the web about crowning a barrel in this fashion.  Since it shoots good I'm going to strip it down and paint it with some Gun Kote.  The original finish is in bad shape from a previous Hurricane.
