BAR Trigger Extension?
« on: November 06, 2011, 03:52:13 AM »
A hunting bud of mine's Dad cut off his right index finger and middle finger in a farm equipment accident recently.  He shoots a BAR for hunting but is having trouble switching to LH or using his ring finger to fire gun.  Is there anything made that attaches to the trigger that extends out so he could utilize what's left of his right index finger to shoot rifle? I've searched the web with no luck.  Thanks.

My wife's grandfather lost his index finger to a belt on a corm picker and managed with the middle finger but even that was a bit awkward.. I don't know of an extension for the index finger remnants but it sounds as if a device called a winter trigger might work. It was devised to allow rifle use in brutal winter weather with mittens in place for the military. It is just a lever pivoted to allow it to bear on the trigger and apply pressure. It is squeezed with the untire shooting hand using the thumb as the counter point. A pring applies a minimal tension to keep it in place.. They are dangerous as they are outside the trigger guard and prone to bumping.. Still if care is taken it should be a doable fix. I would make the actuater lever pivot at the bottom and follow the inside conture of the pistol grip. The top end would enter the side of the trigger guard and a bar cross the trigger face. The spring could be a simple torsion spring on the bottom pivot lever. The hard part would be adjusting it to allow a natural grip and minimum squeeze and to clear quickly to allow the trigger itself to reset.. By moving the trigger contact bar down further on the trigger blade the leverage would change allowing a lighter feeling pull while staying safe. Proably would be best to have the lever extend around both sides of the trigger guard with the bar between the two ends. Should work ok but will require getting used to..
