.45 GAP
« on: November 09, 2003, 01:32:13 PM »
Chris:

Seems as good with bullet weights up to 200 grains but not any better than the 45 ACP.  The 200 grain gold dots look good so far, but time will tell.

The appeal around here appears to be 10 rounds of 45 in a G17 size package.

Seems to me the Italians had a shorter .45. They had it because they couldn't legally own a caliber that was a military caliber. For a lot of pistols they used a lengthened 9mm and a shortened .45. In other words, hasn't this already been done?

do you mean a shorter grip from the front to back?

Chris:

Yes that is probably the main thing.....better trigger reach for those with smaller hands.  I believe that the 10% reduction in overall size when compared to the G21 is also a factor.

Saw one at the gun show today. It was a nice pistol. I guess if the 21 felt too large and you still wanted a Glock .45, this would bee the gun for you.

If Glock wanted a 45 with a slimmer feel then why didn't they do a slim line job on the mod 21 like Robar Inc does. I  would like to see them do that to their full size 45 and 10mm. It seems to make sense to me.

Guys,
The single stack mdl 36 is nice. Only seven rounds, but if you need more than that without a reload, you're most likely dead anyway-----With autos the thickness of the grip in the double stacks is the largest problem in concealment.

The 20 came out first in Europe. The grip was designed for the longer 10mm cartridge. They made it into a .45 for the American market. They could of just made a 36 with a longer single stack grip and use a regular .45 ACP cartridge. But, you know what they say about opinions . . .

I like the 37 a lot.  Its a 45 in a 9mm case length loaded to 45+p range
with low pressure.  The changes in the case should make for less malfunctions.  This round may do to the 45acp what the 40 cal did to the 10 mm.

Don,
From the published ballistics that I have read, my conclusions are somewhat different than yours. The GAP appears to do well in the lower bullet weight ranges, but falls short with the heavier ones. Due, no doubt to the reduced case capacity being taken up by the longer bullets. I'm not a mathematician but it would seem logical to me if you reduce case volume and drive the same weight projectile at the same velocity as the larger volume case--------pressures would have to be higher and the pressure curve would be shortened. I applaud any new development in the firearms industry. However, it would have made more sense from my viewpoint to have simply made a single stack fullsize Glock in 45ACP. My guess would be, that initial sales of the mdl 37 will be strong due to a strong marketing campaign by Glock, and the desire of some to own something different. I don't think you can compare the 10mm to the 45 ACP. The 45ACP has been around almost a century and is growing in popularity. The 10mm in comparison is a relative newcomer that got a lot of bad press it didn't deserve. But it too is regaining popularity. Glad you're happy with the GAP, different strokes you know.

Glock has no interest in making a single stack.  Several years ago I wrote to them about making one in .45, they really did reply which surprised me.  They seem to like the double stack idea, tho.  My suggestion was to build a .45 about the size of the model 19, but in single stack.  Oh well.  Well the price is really good on the model 37 right now,as stated(REALLY GOOD).  I just bought one, will pick up in a couple of days, will give an evaluation after shooting it.  Figure that even if it flops on the market, then some years down the road it may have some collector value.  I like 45 calibers, whether acp, colt or 45-70, I'm willing to give it a try.

Wallynut,
Just a note of intrest: my mdl 36 fits nicely into my mdl 19 holsters.

Savage, I was speaking about the bullet weights I have seen for the 45GAP which are the 200 grain. To me it does not make sense to use a 230 gn in the 45 GAP so I did not even consider it an issue.

My comments on low pressure were in relation to the 40 vs the 45 GAP not
the 45acp.  The problem I have with the 40 is pressure, yes it replaced the 10 but in doing so created a pressure issue.  The 45 GAP is only around 23,000 compared to 21,000 for the ACP.  Efficiency and reliability
will make the difference, wait and see.

Well Don, just did some reading on the GAP and it seems Winchester is now offering a 230gr loading. Both the GAP and the ACP+P operate in the 23000cup range vs the 35000cup range of the .40S&W & 9mm. This represents a significant advantage in a service cartridge. The mdl 37 is a bit of a hybrid with the mating of the mdl 21 slide to the 17/22 grip frame. Perhaps this smaller grip frame will be more suitable for the smaller officers. Looks like the .40S&W may have some competition. Bet they'll be complaints of excessive recoil with this big brutish .45!
