8pt Buck with a revolver in CT
« on: December 05, 2011, 05:39:57 PM »

Never had a chance to get out with the Bow and on opening day of the rifle season I worked till 8AM then broke a fever when I got home from a sinus/upper respiratory infection that kept me out of the woods till the second day of the shotgun/rifle/revolver season. At 8:50 AM I shot this 8 point Buck with my 10.5" S&W PC 460XVR, he weighed 145lbs dressed so he was around 185lbs live weight according to the chart I have. Not a monster but he's my first with the revolver, so he will be mounted. I know it's not the first with a hand gun in CT but everyone at the check station, gun shop and my taxidermist hadn't heard of one taken with one yet.

The deer wanted to be in my freezer, he stopped right at 50 yards (the Maximum distance I set for myself). I had him in the cross hairs from 70yds, he hesitated slightly when he crossed where I had walked but kept coming, the sight picture was steadier than at any time I was at the range practicing. Dry firing over 100 times the few days prior helped a lot. The shot hit exactly where I was aiming, went through both lungs clipping the top of his heart, he jumped straight up about 10 feet and ran around 40 yards (crashing all the way) before piling up.

Excellent.  Thats something I always wanted to do, get a deer with my revolver.  I shot a couple of bears with it but never a deer. Thats a nice buck too.

Congratulations on your deer. I am very envious of your achievement. I have hunted Connecticut many years but as a non resident the state will not let me hunt deer on private land with a revolver. I have hunted the Nutmeg state for decades with a handgun for small game and when I heard the news that the state would allow revolvers for deer I became quite elated. Then I found out it would be for residents or non resident landowners. What a bummer.
Anyways. I wish you well in your endeavors.

Very nice!
