deep hole drilling
« on: November 06, 2011, 11:18:16 AM »
well, i am back at it again after recovering from the job from hell at work,
lost my blue print for the daghren so i am making my 300lb parrot, out of the steel that has been in the lathe for 4 months,  and i am looking for a better way of drilling out the bore.  i have been using standard HSS steel bits, step drilling the bore out, welding the bits to round stock to extend the bit longer, and now i am looking at carbide spade bits   so what should i buy to drill out a 1.125 -1.75 bore 19 inches deep or so. ??  thanks,

till then i will keep up with the bad habbit  but i know that one day the bit is going to break off deep in the bore and then i will lose my mind trying to get it out. or just go fishing.

Take a look at Wesley P.'s Treatise on Drilling here:   http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,112675.0.html  Wes or 'Powder Keg' had it figured out in 2007.  No sense in re-inventing the wheel.

I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

Something else Powder Keg came up with to help in deep hole drilling is the modified hand wheel on the tail stock because it was wrecking his hands. As soon as I saw it I knew I needed one. I've been working on mine in spare time and it is already awesome.

Here's another setup.

The lathe was too short for the barrel,
so I pulled the tail stock off and
drilled from a block mounted on the carriage.

This drill shank wasn't drilled for coolant.
I milled a slot down one side of the shaft
and soldered a copper tube into the slot.

Bore size was  2.375 dia by 36" deep.
Lead hole was 17/32, or a tad over the thickness
of the spade blade.

have a blast,
