Which rifle to use opening day
« on: November 06, 2011, 12:01:40 PM »
I have three H&R's sighted in for Nov.15. 35 whelen, 444 marlin, 45-70 BC. All are new to me it's hard to chose what one to take my first H&R whitetail with. 9 days to go. I feel like a kid at Christmas lol.

I was supposed to hit the range this weekend... bad cold has kept me home...

I really wanted to use the 25-35 or the "new" 357 maxi barrel this year... looks like the 454 will go again. Its all sighted and ready. Both the 357 and 25-35 have had changes done...

If yer walkin', I'd say the .444.  If you're in a shack/blind with a rest, I'd say the .45-70 BC and if you are able to shoot longer flats in open, I'd say the .35 Whelen.  ;)

Been carrying the .45/70 all season so far. Determined to take a deer with it this year. Took a big nanny the other day with buck shot. Didnt have the .45/70 because I was supposed to be squirrel huntin. Wont be making that mistake twice. The swuirrels can wait till spring. ;)

mine get jealous, so I have to use one in the am, and another in the pm, and the one that has not been fired at game yet gets the 1st preference.

If I'm in the stand all day for a sit I take the 270, if it's raining or snowing or I plan on walking I take the 45-70 (peep sights). If my boy is along taking advantage of the PA "mentored youth" hunting we can only have one gun with us and that would be his 44mag.
Good luck to all you on opening day.

I will be carring .357 Maxi in the Handi and Contender super 14. Handi got 2 last year so Contender gets first shot.

Boy will be carrying the .44 Handi.

My daughter will carry my 20 Ultra slug.

H&R will be the theme in our area ;)

What do you guys think would be a good deer side arm? Trying to talk the  B-I-L into buying one. Would have come in handy while we were squirrel hunting last week. Buck shot just doesnt leave a good blood trail. I was thinking something like a Ruger in .44mag or .45lc. Something he could shoot out to about 70+ yrds.

Firearm season starts Saturday in Indiana. I'll be taking my Handi maxi. It served me well last year.

evidrine. either of the sidearms you mentioned would work. It takes a lot of practice to consistently make 70+ yard shots. At least it does for me.

Good luck to all.

I like my .45 Colt. 5.5" Ruger Blackhawk.  I use that with a 70 yard Max. mindset.  If it's over 50 yards, I'd probably just take the .45LC Classic Carbine off the shoulder and wack it with that.  ;)

If it were me I'd take the  .35 whelen!  What a fantastic round!

My shorty .38-55 is going to hunt this season.  I haven't taken a deer with it yet, and it's shooting like a MOA death ray.

My new to me ejector 30-30 will accompany me for the first time.  The first deer I ever shot was with a 30-30, but I haven't used the caliber since.  Saturday can't get here quick enough.

I'm taking a Savage 10ML-II (100yds +) and a Ruger 77/44 (inside a 100yds) with me for opening morning, as a matter of fact I'll carrying that combo for the whole season.
My daughter won't make it for the morning hunt but will be meeting me about 1p.m. and she'll have her 77/44 with her to hunt with this year.
Good Luck to all of you!!!!!!

Time is getting close for me here... I was down in the loading room getting things ready and remembered my 454 has new camo stocks... One maxi has new wood and the other a new scope AND camo stocks.... The 30-30 has new stocks and the 307 isn't sited in.
The 243, 280 and '06 are too much, the 22H 223 not legal and 32-20 too little... The USH's are ready, but I dont want to take a shotgun... Wait.. whats that in the corner behind the BC's... oh yea, I forgot I had that one... My syn stocked 45-70!! and its sited in with a good loading of 4198 that moves a 300Gr HP at almost 2000fps 1" high at 50yards. If memory serves, I haven't killed a deer with this gun! My buddies kid got his first VT deer with it some years back when it wore peeps and was considered a "rain rifle".

Pete,
I will make you proud and carry a 45-70 for the beginnings of this season!!
