20 guage ultra slug
« on: November 12, 2011, 11:55:13 PM »
Well I know it has been talked about before but what have you found is the most accurate sabot slug for these guns. I know every barrel is diff but just looking for a starting point. In previous post it looks like many have had success with the rem buckhammers but on the sabot line they are slow. Anyone try with success the hornady or federal barnes that are about 400 ft per second faster or is that to fast for the 28" twist in these guns. That 400 ft sec makes a big difference in trajectory when looking at the charts.

I have to go with the buckhammers since they are the most accurate at 100 yards out of my 20 gauge Tracker ll barrel.

In my opinion the difference in trajectory vs. slow and accurate, or fast and accurate, are really a moot point if you think about it, if you are sighted in for shotgun range of 50 to 100 yards.

Beyond that, you are pushing the limits of the effectiveness of your shotgun, and it then becomes an ethical consideration.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

The two best I have found so far are the Lightfield, and the Hornady 20ga. SST.
I just HATE paying the price for them.
I carry a single shot.
'cause it only takes one shot.

I find it ironic that in others post about the handi 20 guage that many have had best success with rem buck hammers and federal power shok. These are on the slow end of the sabot spectrum at no greater than 1500 ft second. The 1-28 twist is ideal for the faster sabots. I think I am going to give the federal barnes and sst a try first and if not try the slower sabots.

I've always used the federal Barnes in 12 and 20 with excellent accuracy and on game performance.

"The two best I have found so far are the Lightfield, and the Hornady 20ga. SST.
I just HATE paying the price for them."   I am sure I could get both of these to shoot just as well as the Buckhammers I use but when you look at the price the buckhammers win every time. With Remington dicontinuing the 1200fps reduced recoil 20's I bought 2 cases of the 2 3/4" 1500's Buckhammers should last the rest of my days. My reasoning goes all the way back to the Hasting slugs then the SST's then Lightfield then the lite Buckhammers now these I'm done.Plus they ain't never gonna get cheaper. Kurt

Sabots are limited at my local stores. All that I have found are rem copper solids. hor sst and federal fusion. I guess I will try them and if not I will have to order some buckhammers or federal power shok.

My 20ga Tracker II likes Lightfield 2 3/4" and my kids 20 20ga USH likes Buck hammer 2 2/3" Personally I don't worry about the 400 FPS difference I shoot what is most accurate. They do kill deer.

So far, for my USH 20, looks like Lightfields and Buckhammer for slower slugs and Win Partition Gold for the faster ones.

I've tried 4 in my USH 12. It "liked" the Winchester (2-4") BRI and the Remington Coppersolids (3-4"). It hated the Federal Fusions (like, minute of barn door). But it LOVES the Hornady SST's. Like 1.25" all day. When you find one that works, don't argue, just go with it.

I found that the Winchester Dual Bond 2.75" shoot best in my 20 USH. Will regularly put 3 of these into a 3.75" to 3.9375" CTC group at 150 yards.

Do you know if its all BH's... 12 & 20? I just went out to Dicks last night and picked up four boxes of the Hornady's and Light Fields. They had a full shelf of the Buck Hammers in both 12 & 20 GA flavors.

My 12 USH like the Buck-Hammers, but my 20 not so much... I also shoot the Hornady SST's in the 20 and they shoot very well. I have not taken a deer with the Hornady. But the 12Ga Buck Hammers are lethal!

Good morning to all. I was wondering if anyone had ever tried a paperpatch 58 cal. muzzle loading bullet in the 20 ga. I recently loaded a few for my 20ga 490 topper but have not shot them yet. They are 425 gr lead. The bbl. is not rifled.
  thanks

Smoke house,
Years ago I had a friend case me some wasp waist slugs from a Lyman mold he had. I loaded them Ina WAA12R wad. They shot OK as good as most conventional slugs of the day. This was before sabot slugs really. Caught on.

Just for safety's sake guess I'm heading back to Dicks for some 12 GA Buck hammers!

CW after I read that I called and spoke to Sandra at CS and she stated that due budget cuts the buck hammer line was being shut down. So it sounds like all buck hammers are going away.

I'm flabbergasted....

I just got home from Dick's and in the spot on the shelf where the buck hammers where are now Sluggers.... NO BUCK HAMMERS ON THE SHELF!!!!!
I grabbed a couple extra boxes of Hornady's in 20 and Accutips in 12Ga...

I checked the ammo cabinet... I have five boxes of 12Ga 2 3/4" and 2 of 20 GA 2 3/4" shells... My 20 doesn't like them so no worries but the 12 does!! I need to find more!!!!

I have 6 boxes of 2 3/4 inch BuckHammers and 4 boxes of 3inchers. \\\\\Both shoot very nicely in my 20 gauge USH, can't believe they are discontinuing them! Surely they are coming up with a replacement.

I get real good accuracy from the federal power shok out of my 20 ga ultra slug gun. they are an inexpensive saboted slug. I only paid 5.99 a box for them. Monday I shot my first deer with my  ultra slug gun using 3" federal premium vital shok sabot slugs. It Left an impressive blood trail, Buck only went 25 yards. I bought these Federal vital shoks on special for only 6.99 a box, after Mondays performance I would like to stick with these.

The cost was pat of the allure of the buck hammers! 6-7$ a box. But they are not sabots they are a full bore slug on a "stalk" of plastic kinda like the Brenneke slugs.

It's a shame they are being discontinued. Time to stock up boys.
