H&R M1900 12 ga. help, please.

Don't know if this is the proper place to post this question, but... I've just acquired an H&R M1900 single shot 12 ga. with removable hinge pin in pretty fair condition.  It locks up tight and the bores are in good condition.  Does anyone know if it is safe to fire modern 2 3/4" shotshells in this?  Does anyone know of a source of low-pressure shells suitable for this?  And finally, as an aside, when did most of the shotgun manufacturers go to smokeless powder?

Welcome! I have a model 1908 which I think is the same shotgun with fixed hinge, it's been shooting modern 2¾" loads since it was new in the 1940s when my Dad bought it, I don't shoot steel or hevi-shot in it tho, it's taken many grouse, pheasants, a few ducks and even a turkey with high base #6.  ;)

The Model 1900 was dropped from production circa 1916.  The H&R Literature which listed this model and the 1908 indicates that both were chambered for 2 1/2" shells in 1916.  The 1922 catalogue lists the 1908 as chambered for 2 3/4" shells.  I would have a gunsmith check the chamber depth before shooting modern shells in your gun - it may have been modified sometime after it was made.
