30-30AI Contender Carbine
« on: October 07, 2011, 11:57:10 AM »
Starting the process! Put together a 30-30AI on a Contender frame, MGM 22" tapered fluted stainless barrel, compact Burris 3-9 scope.

as you can see using the Contender frame allows me to use the tried and true choate folding stock, have a G2 debating using it. Will try both see if there is any accuracy difference.

first day out rifle shoots just over an inch with factory Federal 150's fireforming, pleasantly surprised.

anyone have a pet 125gr BT load? preferably one of the common 3031 or RE7 powders as i have them already on hand, what velocity can I get?

thinking about looking for a 110 load, could use inexpensive bullets for dogs and Barnes for antelope and whitetail. Anyone have 110gr experience and loads they want to share?

I have not used a .30-30AI T/C Contender Carbine but I did have a 14" .30-30AI T/C Contender Handgun a few years back. I used mainly 125gr. & 150gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips. I loaded IMR & H - 4198 with the 125's and IMR-3031 with the 150's.

I actually took a few Whitetails with the 125gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips with great results from the 14" Handgun.

I'm interested in this as well.  Have a 30-30 AI in an H&R and need to work with it for a cabin gun, won't hurt too much if it gets stolen.  I have a Contender in 7-30 Waters, would the same powders work in both?  DP

Super 14 shooters seem to favor 4198 but I wonder if little longer barrel would benefit from a slightly slower powder...H355? 4895?...hoping someone can provide info if not looks like ill have a winter project!

Hunted deer with it a couple years ago, but didn't see anything with enough horns, lots of does and a couple forkys, we have a 3-point minimum requirement on one side for bucks.  :( A friend loads the same bullet in his 308 Win at ~2900fps, he's killed several muley bucks with it, so the bullet is a good choice.

trying to use "common" powders I already have on the shelf.....
4198 is giving me 2900-3000 fps with 125 NBT no pressure signs but accuracy is 1 1/2 and velocity extreme spreads are 100fps.......
RE7 and 125 NBT gives 1" groups at 2700fps but that seems tops as groups quickly double with more velocity.
RE7 and 150gr SST are showing sub 1" groups early but havent had a chance to put them over a chrono yet.....
22" MGM barrel.
