It is considered a lever gun level load. In my 32" barreled rifle it has a very sharp recoil, you'll want a lot of eye relief if you have a scope.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

Factory Hornady Leverevolution 325gr 45-70 ammo is loaded to trapdoor pressures, as stated on the back of the box, it's good for any firearm originally chambered in 45-70.  ;)

Trapdoor? Really? I was impressed by the kick, significantly more than my 410 gr 1750 fps loads.-

Yes, the Hornady ammo is loaded to SAAMI Spec which is 28kpsi.

That's a trapdoor load too by Hodgdon data, they list 405g cast at 1727fps and just 23.6kcup. Lyman lists 405g cast at 1828fps in their levergun data at just 27.8kcup which they limit to the SAAMI spec, CUP and PSI have equal values in the 45-70.

"Trapdoor" means different things to different people - and to different manual publishers.  See below, then tell me what "Trapdoor" pressure really is.

Data Source...Trapdoor...Marlin...Ruger (CUP)
Lyman........18,000....28,000....40,000
Speer.........21,000....28,000....35,000
Hornady.....25,000....40,000....50,000
Hodgdon....28,000....40,000....50,000
Factory......18,000 reported
