That's crazy!!!!
Beans with the ham hocks is what I grew up on.
Mom would make eithwer corn bread ot potato pancakes ( NOT POTATO PATTYS)
WE put beans on a plate ,never in a bowl and spiced it up with vingar or hot pepper juice.
NOW I GOTTA TRY MAYO!!!
Any other weird stuff you guys gonna get me to tyr? ???
ummm dont stay here to long or yull be eatin bbq coon, turnips, deer liver and crawdads!

My Grandma always had a cast iron pot full of a mix of Great Northern and Pinto Beans on the stove in the living room.  She always put in a ham hock or a piece of fat back.  And she would cut up an onion and throw that in as well. By lunch they were done and we would eat some of them.  But by dinner they were better.  Seldom were any left after dinner.

half and half red beans and pinto beans, soaked overnight
in the pot early in the morning
cover in water
salted ham chunks or ham-hock or preferably a BIG ham bone with a bunch of pieces still on it
one cut up onion
lawry's seasoning salt
maybe a bit of brown sugar
 
cook all day on low
make corn bread... I still prefer jiffy mix but cut up a bunch of jalepeno and put the chunks in the mix, maybe a handfull or two of grated sharp cheddar too.
 
Two pieces of corn bread in the bowl, a big spoonfull of real butter, cover with beans and ham.
 
Be sick all night from eating too dang much...
 
Do it again the next night with the leftovers...

We went to a civil war reenactment a few years ago and they had a huge kettle of beans hung over the fire. I watched them stir it and there were big ol chunks of hame in there. Boy did my mouth water. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D
