S&W .500 barrel
« on: November 27, 2011, 08:57:32 AM »
Greetings guys.

I just picked up a S&W .500 barrel at a local gun show.
It is 20 inches long.
SS and fluted.

Who has used this set up for deer?
How was the performance?
Any preference in ammo or bullet weight?

I carry a single shot.
'cause it only takes one shot.

I have owned the same barrel for some time now with a Bushnell 3x9x40 Bushnell Elite 3200 on it. Mine prefers 350 gr JHP's over 35 gr of Lilgun. I believe they're rated at 1397 fps out of a pistol so the rifle barrel will kick them up some more. Very accurate and will body slam a whitetail. If you're not into Lilgun then H110 also produces some great speed and accuracy from the 500. Good luck and good shooting.

Just checked my data. Speed is actually 1697 fps with this load from an 8 3/8 inch pistol. Should be up close to 2000 fps from a longer barrel with no cylinder gap.

I have one of those barrels and had very good accuracy with the 300gr Hornady FTX bullets and H110 near max loads.
