« on: August 28, 2011, 03:49:07 PM »
What are your guys thoughts on putting a red-dot on a turkey gun? or should I just stick with rifle sights? What are the pros ans cons of each.

I've had one on 835 since the second season, The first season I missed a beard dregger cause I forgot to use kentucty windage. Pros are I hit exactly what I aim at. Cons are forgetting to turn it off and running your battery down. I keep a spare battery in wallet.

I started out with a bead on my 870 26" barrel. I went to a 20" cantilever barrel with a dot scope. Now I have an Encore 20 ga with a 20" barrel with Tru-Glo sights.

Pros and cons

I hunt in Michigan woods and swamp edges so the bead works for those ranges 15-30 yds. No batteries

The dot scope was good a little more precise but at those ranges I really do not need it. It uses batteries.

The Tru-Glo sights work excellent. You can see them in low light even if it is not enough to make them glow, under the canopy. No batteries.

I would guess as I age and may try to stretch out the ranges sitting in a blind looking out into the open fields a magnified crosshair might be nice.

I lean to the Right and aim at the Left

I use them and they work fine but... have a couple of buddys who say the have had turkeys spook  and the best we can figure was they saw the glow from their (the turkeys) end of the scope. look at one and you will see what I'm talking about.

First thing I did was put one on my 835 right after I bought it for turkey hunting. To my knowledge I have never had one spook because of the red dot.
