Replacement Ramrod for .32 cal.
« on: January 13, 2004, 11:53:55 AM »
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I recently purchased a used CVA .32 cal percussion rifle with a bent aluminum ramrod. It is smaller than 5/16. Any suggestions for a replacement? CVA has stated they can't help me. I would like a flexible rod. Thanks.

Have you checked Mountain State Muzzleloading?  I don't even know if they are still around but they used to carry a wide selection of flexible ramrods.

Are the ramrod channels set up for 1/4"?  That would be best for a .32.  The 5/16" is too snug in a .32 and the dirt and grit can wear out the muzzle.  I know this from experience.

If you can't find a 1/4" flexible rod you could just make 1/4" wooden rods for hunting and keep a 1/4" all brass rod for the range.  1/4" rods break pretty easy.

Aluminum arrow blanks work nice for smaller diameter range rod. you can put a 10-32 insert in each end for cleaning tools.Carbon arrow blanks might give you the flexability you want.

Sduve,.... Why not go with a 1/4" brass rod, you could have the end "threaded" to fit a 10-32 clean'n jag,.... or,... Track of The Wolf sells 5/16" synthetic ramrods and the .32 cal clean'n jags for'em (if you want flexible)!
Anyway, jest'a couple'a thots!! :D

I use a small diameter "treated fence post", for'a ramrod in my big-bores!!

:D     Yes  a .250  brass rod is what I have been using for about 17 years!!
I went to a large weld shop, and bought a .250 brass braising rod, ( for joining metal  with acetaline )   I have a 40" barrel so I had to weld 2 rods together so it was long enough.  Then I turned a jag for one end, and threaded the other end for a piece of brass rod  .562" in dia.  a handle for pulling balls or stuck patches.

Keep it clean , no dirt,  no wearing out the muzzle!

I used to buy 1/4", and 3/8" brass "round-stock" at a blacksmith's shop, in Evanston WY, when I lived in Ft. Bridger, and made up "ramrods'n short-starters" for fellas in the club,... even made some to use as "blanket prizes". The blacksmith stocked the "brass round stock" in 20 foot lengths, and would cut me any "lengths" I wanted,.... if I remember correctly, a 3/8"x 48" piece, (in the late 1980's) cost $5.60, and the 1/4" cost $1.00 less.  :D
