6.5 caliber?
« on: December 08, 2011, 05:38:23 PM »
I am looking for a new pistol barrel for my encore. I will put a rifle scope on it. Which has the least amount of recoil.... 6.5 grendel, 6.5 JDJ, 6.5 BRM, or the 6mm br? I know I threw a 6mm in there on the last caliber instead of a 6.5.... any help would be greatly appreciated.

All things being equal, same bullet,  Same bullet weight.
The one going the fastest is going to have the most recoil.
But I think you named off  a bunch of calibers that are like asking the difference between 30-30, 300 Savage, and 30-40 Krag and what has the most recoil.  All throw the same sized bullet about the same speeds with the same amount of powder.
OH powder charge too will add to recoil.  But I Equal powder charge with speed.
On the other side of it, some cases are more efficient than oters and smaller amounts of powder generate the same speed and would have less recoil.  Grab a loading book and see what speeds and powder charges are in the loading tables.

In a recent post titled E E SCOPE.  I asked about an extended eye relief scope on a contender. Mine is a scout type rifle scope with a max of 9.5" of relief.  The feed back was negative.  I have zero knowledge about your choice in cartridges,  but a true rifle scope on any thing short of a 22lr pistol sounds risky at best.

How about a 6 or 6.5 TCU? 223 Rem case, blown out to improved. I would think that in an Encore with a 12" bull barrel and over sized grip set, you would have almost no movement.

I had a .243 I know it isn't a 6.5 but it had little recoil and it was a very flat shooting gun. Might even get another one in the future.

I shoot both 6.5JDJ and 6.5TCU on a Contender frame and there is quite a difference in recoil.  If, I was wanting to do what you're talking about I'd agree with Slim and try the 6.5TCU.  I can tell you that there are a lot of 6.5 bullets that perform well at lower velocities.

As suggested, pick a bullet, a similar load for driving them equally in each cartridge, run them through a recoil calculator and you'll have a reasonable comparison between them.    You'll probably find that the 6.5TCU, 6.5JDJ and 6.5 BRM are going to have less recoil than those based on the BR or PPC cases.

Personally I think the mindset of putting a rifle scope on a handgun is questionable, even on a rimfire barrel.   There are plenty of good handgun scope choices available that will easily do just about any kind of shooting you'd do with a handgun, including long range.

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Slightly off topic but similar, I once tried a rifle scope on my Encore .243 Pistol with a 15" barrel.  All was fine until I snuck up on the scope after the first few cautious shots and joined the "Half Moon Club".. Crescent Scar over the eye brow.. Ouch..  My shooting and hunting friends had a good chuckle at my expense..

As said in earlier posts, Good pistol scopes are to be had and are much safer..  Good Luck

I don't know which one will recoil more. But all should be doable with a rifle scope. I do shoot a .22lr, .223 and a .357 mag with rifle scopes. The secret is patience, practice, practice and more practice. The more recoil and the more Xs used the less field of view you will have. Rifle scopes work well for target shooting and hunting from blinds. I personally like them and feel they have their place on handguns.

PM xphunter on this forum. He has written a great article about handguns with rifle scopes. Or if someone has the link to it its a great source of information perhaps they could post it.

I have never considered putting a rifle scope on a hand gun, other than dot scopes 1x mag. It would seem my preferred shooting style would make it very uncomfortable especially when the scope tagged my forehead. What would be the reason installing a rifle scope on a hand gun?

Most people use them for target shooting. I use mine to shoot silhouette. The .22 and .223 are used in the "flop" prone posistion. The .357 magnum is used standing in the "taco" position. For both positions I have seen everything used from 4x to 36x rifle scopes. With a rifle scope you have more options of power available to you. xphunter and his friends use theirs on some really big booming bolt actions and falling blocks. But they shoot at a match each year that goes out to a 1000 yards. It is imperative the more recoil the better your muzzle break must be. A rifle scope on a handgun is not for everyone. 99% of target shooting and 99.9% of hunting appliccations don't require one. But if you are willing to be patient and practice it will work.

Thanks for all the input guys. My main purpose in putting a riflescope on my handgun is to start in the IHMSA shooting targets. I will also use the gun for some coyote hunting. I will probably have to put on a jp muzzlebrake to help reduce the chance of getting "scope eye." Thanks again for all the input. Anyone ever compare T/C'S muzzle tamer to the JP brake?

I am not a fan of JP's, but I am a fan of Holland's Radial brake-They just flat work, and i have used them on very large rifle cartridges, when using a riflescope. Usually a 6.5-20, 6-24, or 8-32 (Leupold, Sightron or NF).

There is the link on the article.
Currently, I use high magnification riflescopes on center-grip and rear-grip specialty handguns chambered in cartridges as large as 7mm Dakota, 338 Lapua Improved and a 375 Chey-Tac Improved.
Surely, this is not for everyone, and all of these have excellent brakes on them.
Choosing a scope that has a long eye relief for a riflescope is also very important.

Gary Reeder necks the 204 Ruger to 6.5 and comes up with his 6.5 GNR...  I've got mine in a 14 inch Encore pistol barrel with a 12X Leupold rifle scope.  Virtually recoiless.   He takes the 204 case to 6mm for his 240 GNR and 25 for his 257 GNR.  Just a little more powder capacity than the 223 or 222 mag based wildcats.  204 cases are strong and plentiful..  Recent word is he plans to discontinue the 6.5 GNR because they just don't sell well.
