And how was YOUR opening weekend?
« on: October 24, 2011, 01:07:22 PM »
Mine was good; good food, good beer, good moonsh... uh, mason jar likker, good wx - cold but no bugs, good stand - put up a new ladder stand at my favorite spot.  Really like it.  All in all a relaxing time!   ;D

I brought 2 rifles with me but unfortunately I forgot one little thing; ammunituion!   ::)   Fortunately I had a rifle down there, complete with 4 whole rounds.  Oh well, they were enough.  I got my leg of Bambi to roast for Thanksgiving!   ;D

Sounds like a really good start to hunting season. Can't do no bragging myself. Haven't had the time to get in the woods for a couple weeks now. I went before season to clear some trails, move a stand and do some scoutting. I got to tighten up,that oldest grandboy is itchin to go.

Spent opening day camping with my Cub Scout Den.  There were about 900 or so people total at the camp.  I did not see any deer abouts.  I didn't see any critters abouts.  Wonder where all them critters went?

I did convince some of the younger boys that there were bears there for a while, but one of the older boys, about 9 finally told them, and I quote; "don't pay Mr. Ben no attention, he's fulla crap". :(

New member but I'll join in here.  Hunt with my son (he's 26 and it's his turn to fund club memberhip) at his club in Burke County GA.  Opening day was cool (low 30s) but unproductive.  Must have heard 50+ shots that morning but evidently none on club property.  Of the ~10 other members we talked to, most saw nothing - a couple saw does or non-shooter bucks.  Did spook a couple on walk back from evening stand in the dark.  2 w/e later was more productive.  Saw big bodied buck before shooting light - could not get good look at headgear so held fire.  Saw several does & non-shooter bucks on evening stand - took small doe at last light.  Looking forward to this w/e and new stand locations.  Hoping for colder weather - it's near 80F outside now.

Used to date a couple gals from Burke County back in the early 80's. About where are yall hunting at? I did a little hunting around Mckinneys pond area and just below Colemans lake on some timber company land long time ago. Seen some big deer come out of that area. I never got a shot at the big one but killed a few does.

CannonKrazy, 2 of the club's tracts are off Idlewood Road which is off Hwy 25 south of Waynesboro.  We have only hunted these tracts so far.

Well boys, I've been hunting public land along the lake here, shotgun or muzzie only.  I chose my rifled Handi 20 ga, and some nice accurate sabots.  Took a stand in a fallen over tree that gave me a good view of a dried up slew of water where there was a lot of sign.

First three deer passed just after first light.  There is a derelict boat up ahead, that I had paced off to 200 yds.  The deer were at least 30 yds. beyond.  I watched the buck frolic with the does for a while until they made their way out of sight.  About 10:00 am a BIG buck came out following their trail and moving like a man, (buck) with a purpose the way they went.

10:30 am, small buck comes back trotting back the way he went.  In a little bit, he came back out on the trail of more does.

11:00am, Seven deer in sight.  I'm doing mental calculations on bullet drop and energy from a sabot slug.  I'm figuring about 6 feet of holdover and about enough energy to stun a sparrow.

12:00 noon, I took out my sterno and freeze dry and had lunch.  About 30 min. later, a coyote came into the clearing and chased his lunch down, (a mouse I think), and ate it.  He was about 250 yds.  I had a beautiful silver colored fox next.

Sometimes thereafter I took my nap.  Didn't mean to but I did.  I awakened about 1:00 or so, and walked up the way the deer went.  About 80 yds out were some fresh tracks, still beginning to fill with water.

Deer 1, Ben 0.

Good day in the woods.  I'll go back Sat.
