Who makes the best barrel?
« on: November 14, 2011, 12:03:33 PM »
Thinking of a PA or TN build this winter.  MAybe an OH.  I don't really care, so long as it will hit where I aim it.  The heart of any bp firearm is the barrel.  I've heard of Rice, Colerain, and a few others.  I'm not afraid of spending a few extra bucks to get a decent tube.  Anyone have some suggestions on who makes the best ones?  GR Douglass doesn't make bp barrels any more.

It's only my opinion, but Getz and Rice make excellent barrels.   You won't go wrong with either one.

It may sound off the wall, but check with Deer Creek about their barrels.  They bought the equipment and stock from Douglas when that company dropped black powder barrels.  The one on my CVA Mountain Rifle clone I got from them is as good as I have seen.  I don't have their phone number handy or I would give it to you.  It has been posted before, though so you should be able to search for it.  Deer Creek isn't on the Web and a direct phone call is best.

Ed Rayle makes a fine barrel, and keep yours eyes open or ask around if anyone may have some old stock, Bill Large barrels, I have was lucky to be given one for my full stock Hawken build, the thing is a tack driver! Oregon barrels are a good choice also.

There are so many good barrels available today that I doubt anyone could ever prove which is "best", and for that matter the difference between best and average is pretty slight. The guy who has an ordinary "good" barrel, like Green Mountain and who pays his dues in working up the load for absolute best possible accuracy will easily out shoot the guy who owns the best barrel ever made but hasn't put forth the effort to find the optimum load. Muzzleloading is a game where no one can buy success.

The most accurate barrel I ever owned was a Colerain.

Rice Barrel made a .40 for my T/C Renegade that is second to none. Excellent job, match grade, shoots VERY accurate. Nice people to talk with and do business with.

All mentioned above are excellent for good target accuracy.    The best, or most accurate is a difficult thing to answer.  Some are better for offhand, some are great hunter barrels.  None of those mentioned are the absolute most accurate fancy peep sight bench rest barrels.  For reloading a second shot with minimal interference from the first shot's fouling, round bottom rifling seems to offer an edge.  (Even though none of us ever needs a second follow up shot.)
