I fixed it!!
« on: November 19, 2011, 02:16:39 PM »
I'm proud to say I just got done fixing the binding barrel release lever issue on my new 45-70!! I took the rifle apart and started comparing the frame to one of my good ones. When I put them side by side it was obvious that the release lever on the new one wasn't coming back up as high as it should. I started poking around in there and saw that there's only one pin to take out to get the lever out. I knocked out the pin and took out the lever and compared it to one in my goody box... (I bought the guts to a Handi frame from ebay last year).
The piece I took out of my new frame wasn't shaped the same as the other one. The little ear on the bottom of it was bent and it wasn't catching on the other piece that moves the latch. I took the piece from my goody box and put it in there and knocked the pin back in.
SUCCESS!!!  it works like a charm now. ;D ;D
I know it ain't the same as doing a trigger job and stuff but it's the first time I've ever knocked a pin out of one of the frames to do anything to it so I'm kinda proud of myself. 8)

Spanky,

Congrats!  You will like where this leads you.  I got a Tracker I for next to nothing a while back because according to the owner the receiver was broken.  I could see the problem was the lifter/striker was kaput.   I installed a new lifter striker in about 5 minutes and had a functional shotgun.  Please post targets after your trigger job.

Good job Spanky. You are 1 pin ahead of me. I would be scared to do it especially on a brand new gun. Heck even on an old topper, so good for you, now sight it in and fill a tag  :) .

the perklo instructions are really good..

im not mechanically inclined at all.. but was able to tear one of my frames down, clean up the trigger, and put it all back together again with no problem at all..

was so easy that i turned around and broke down another one "just because"..
