Nice!

What's up with the high fence in the background?

Congrats to the young man but it ain't really hunting if they're fenced in. ;)

Spanky to each his own.   You have the choice to lay on the couch all day  I'll choose to take my kid out and teach them to hunt in a challenging yet controlled environment.   The many shades of jealousy....

Dave29...My son killed this ram on the back side of an exotic game ranch that covers hundreds of acres.   The fence serves as a barrier to the adjoining farm.   The fence does not guarantee success nor does it serve to take away the animals innate wildness.   It does guarantee however that the number of people hunting the property on any given day is numbered and controlled so that as a dad I can concentrate on teaching the mechanics of hunting without having to be concerned about the the antics of other unethical hunters.

Oh, I wasn't being condescending by any means when I posted that. I was just wondering if it were some kind of ranch where you pay to hunt. I wish there was something like that here with rams, boars, etc, that you don't see around here.

Dave I apologize for my tone.   It has become a rite of passage for our family.   All of my kids have started their big game hunting with a hunt for exotic game.  I felt a bit uneasy about it at first until I discovered how challenging it really is.   These hunts have been some of the best days of my life.   My youngest son was a bit timid about recoil.  The .357 mag Handi has proven to be a real winner with all of my family (including my wife).   We have shot more than 100 rounds since I got the barrrel a few months ago.   The round (158 gr. FP) anchored the corsican ram quickly.
I am not sure exactly where you live, but I know that a night's stay is included in the hunt package at the place that we hunted today.

I live in Southeastern Indiana, and I take it from your screen name that you live in Ohio. What is the Ranch called?

bukseye congrats to your son on his first kill. :) I hunted a high-fence area once and hunted 3 hard days before I took the animal I wanted, I did see plenty of game, fallow deer,Buffalo, elk and rams but my wallet wasn't thick enough for them.

It is a cool looking animal! And family time is what it is about.  And Spanky kind of picked on us (My kids not being able to hold up a heavy gun last year ...said they should stay home and play video games... something to that effect) last year too I was mad for a while but you will get used to him, (he did add a  ;) , so he did mean it in fun) he usually has good points to add And they outshine when he takes a jab once in a while. So keep doing what is right for you and your family and we can all enjoy your pics!
These forums mostly reflect how we enjoy our spare time and if you can spend it teaching your son hunting or anything he can enjoy the rest of his life then it is quality time.
Thanks for the post!  thejanitor

I'd love to go on an exotic animal hunt but no way could I afford to leave the country for it so that would probably be the only way I could.

Congrats to him! High fence areas can be a challenge.

I know people that say hunting a food plot isn't hunting. Where I hunt (38 acres) you have a food plot or you just about don't see deer cause they stay on the neighbors' food plots...  Occasionally I catch one slipping thru the woods but I don't have enough land to do much "hunting" (its family land and mom and dad live on the front half, limiting my huntable land to about 20 acres) so food plots it is. Hope one day I can own / have access to 100+ acres but this is what I've got for now. Hey it puts meat in the freezer and I can spend quality time with my kids.

Sorry for the hijack

I guess you missed the  ;) . Alot of folks don't think high fence hunting is challenging and I was kinda poking fun at that. I guess you didn't catch my brand of sarcastic humor. :-\  Personally I wouldn't hunt a fenced in animal... but I don't begrudge anyone else the opportunity.
As far as laying on the couch all day... I don't even know what color my couch is... I spend all my time working or hunting with my 14yr. old nephew. ;) I've been teaching him how to read game trails, spot animal sign, how to use the wind and terrain to his advantage, how to make natural blinds, to spot and stalk game, etc.
I would assume they teach "hunters" all that stuff at the ranch don't they?  Of course they do... what was I thinking? ;)
Once again... congrats to you and your son. That's a good looking animal. :)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my nephew will get his first deer this year. I've got his gear ready, his ammo loaded and some good spots picked out for opening weekend.
I'm bringing the camera... just in case. ;D

What is the price on a ram like that at DD ranch? I have thought about trying hunting at a ranch here in Ohio in the past.

Congrats to you and your Son!
Many people have preconceived ideas of what high fence hunting is about. I admit to having looked down my nose at it at one time. My Brother-in-law wanting some company on his hunts introduced me to it several years ago and I was very pleasantly surprised. The place we hunted covered an entire valley. The game was not easily found at all and as wild as any to be found anywhere. Here's a photo of a ram I took there.
