Southern zone success?
« on: November 26, 2011, 04:25:10 AM »
My brother and I each shot does, mine Thanksgiving morning his today. We are in 7J. Not much shooting here- almost none in the state forest to our north- not many guys out hunting. Hunters are sitting a lot, and no one appears to be driving woods. Too warm for most deer to be moving- they just picked the corn to our north, so we're hoping to see more deer as they've lost that bedding area and will move into our clear cuts.

Anyone else out there shooting anything?

I'm in 7F, in the Town of Sennett, between Auburn and Skaneateles.

I only got out 3-4 times during bow season and did not take a shot.

We were visiting our daughter for opening weekend of the regular season.

On Monday I dropped a large doe and yesterday morning took another one.  We've got a good number of deer moving around and they are not following their more normal routines.

Due to the warm weather they are laying up more than  normal.  I guess I can't hate them for that.  We're on pace for a record warm November and the deer have all got their winter coats on with only one way to take them off. and that's a way they don't want to try out.

All the corn has been shelled off in the neighboring farms so at least they aren't living in dry standing corn where a deaf deer could here you moving.

What we really need is some cold blustery dark overcast afternoons so that the deer break cover before the end of legal hunting at sundown.  Once they feel pressure I have my best results from still hunting into small bits of cover in fields that everyone else ignores and overwatching the routes out of dense cove late in the afternoon. Dark afternoons get them moving while it is still legal to shoot.

Good luck.
