30/30 and reloader 15
« on: November 24, 2011, 06:16:00 AM »
does anyone have data for a 30 30 with re15 and 150gr winchester fp's

Ive found a load listed in lee 2nd edition. 150 jacketed with re15 32.8 to 36.0c
the same data is included in the load card that came with the lee dies
and would like confirmation of it.

alliant lists only speer bullets in their guide

winchester doesnt even have data for this bullet online

but I only have this one source from lee and would like a cross reference
alliant/speer seem to have formed a mutual admiration club as far as data excluding everyone else

Ive got lots of re15 for the whelen and 308
and the 150 Winchesters were what was available locally

I don't think you'll find any specific data for the Winchester bullet and Rl 15, but if you use the data you have, and follow the old axium of starting low and working up all will be well.
34-36 grs of rl15 is usually where things come together with the 150's depending on the rifle, brass, primer etc.
Speer and Alliant are owned by the same parent co. That's why the all speer bullet data on the web site.

I agree with Ranch13, I did check with Hornady Manual 7 which list RL-15 powder with the 150-grain and 150-grain RN.  It shows a starting charge of 29.5 and a maximum charge of 34.0.

Speer Manual 12 shows the following load using RL-15 and their 150-grain Flat-Sp.  They start with 30.0 grains and Max out at 34.0C grains.  C=compressed load.

All of my old Winchester manuals show WW powder with WW bullets.
If you are limited to the loading tools in a Lee Loader and you are using a powder recommended by Lee you should be okay.

thanks guys, Ive got the lee 2nd and lyman 49th and a host of" one caliber one book" loading guides from loadbooks usa.(which are surprisingly useful)  just dont have the 30-30 version and my 2 standard editions are vague enough to make me  stop and ask for a 2nd opinion.
I really dont think you can put enough re15 in an uncompressed 150 loading to overdo it and I dont go to compressed loadings, ever.
Ill find a faster powder before I play there, but thought it better to ask than risk my weapon or myself.

Rl 15 is one of my go to powders in the 30-30, good velocity and accuracy, especially with the 170's, and it really shines in the 30-30ai.
748 is my other powder of choice

Yep, I feel like RL-15 was designed for the 30/30, you really can't beat it. ;D

I have Lyman, Lee, Speer manuals, plus I've got these small manuals that I ordered from midway a few years ago. They are about 6-8 dollars apiece. I've got one for each caliber of rifle I have. Might want to go to midway and check them out. When it comes to reloading, the knowledge the better!! 8)

Nice to know that RL-15 works well in the 30-30 I'll have to try it out in mine.  I've been trying over the years to narrow down my powder choices that work well in multiple rifles and so far RL-15 is my powder of choice in my 300 Sav. and Russian 54r.

It'll also (rl15) work good in the 405 winchester,308 and 223.
