Remington knife needs new gut hook
« on: December 04, 2011, 09:42:29 AM »
I have a Remington folding 2-blace knife that was made by Camilus.  Camilus is no longer in business and the name was purchased by another knife company.  They did not purchase any assets, just the name.
About 15 years ago I misplaced the knife for a few days and the person who found it attempted to sharpen the gut-hook by filing both sides.  I remembered where I left the knife and the man who found it gladly returned it to me - with the boogered up blade.  I have tried to reclaim a cutting edge but it is hopelessly ruined.
Is there any place I can send this knife to have a new gut-hook blade made for it?  I know the idea is not cost effecient but I really like the main blade and sorely miss the gut hook blade.  The knife also has sentimental vaule for me and I'd like to pass it to my grandson someday.
Any ideas?

If you really want to spend all that money, my first suggestion is to google/bing on the knife and it's model number.  You might locate a replacement(same knife) or at least a knife with a blade you could cannibalize and transfer to your present one; assuming it's absolutely necessary it have the same handle.  The only (somewhat..to very) expensive alternative I can think of is to go to the various knife forums that have a custom knifemakers thread, or just google on custom knife makers, and explain the situation.  Perhaps one of the makers there will consider that commission. It must have an awful lot of sentimental value.

Thanks for your suggestion.  The sentimemtal value of the Camillus knive has its limit.  I'm not made of money.  The main blade of this knife has been sharpened so many times that the resulting shape (and ease of resharpening) is desirable to new model.  I just touch is up on my F.Dick hypersteel and its ready to go.
My favorite gut blade is on my Gerber one blade folder, but the blade has three faults.  When it is folded, the gut slot is up and requires ones attention to avaoid an accident.  The other fault is that the inside edge of the blade is razor sharp and if my thumb or opposing hand gets in the way, ouch.  The shape of the main blade is not pointed enought to clean the anus area and lower legs.  The gut hook is a perfect ten however.

You can probably find a whole new knife easier than a finding a maker to replace the blade.  I hang out on the knife forums quite a bit and it seems that most makers don't care to do work like that, honestly.  You may be able to get one to regrind the old blade and make it usable again.
