Ithica 1911A1
« on: December 02, 2011, 07:37:56 PM »
I bought a Ithica 1911A1 from a friend yesterday. The gun would have been a collector except the previous owner did some home gunsmithng and made some changes to the gun. Front strap of the frame has been peaned (dimples for increased grip) and the rear sight removed and the dovetail widened to accept a different sight.  I ran three magazines through it and it functions flawlessly. I took it home and cleaned it thoroughly after I bought it.  I like the 1911 platform but I am cautious about older guns.  I looked up the serial number on the frame and it was manufactured and shipped in 1945.  All of the markings are clear and the gun is very tight. I will keep this gun but wonder if I should just leave it as is or should I add some newer parts to upgrade it.  I would like to add a ambi safety and a larger beaver tail grip safety but that would mean changing it more than it already has been. the pistol is a shooter and other than the changes I mentioned, it is still original. It does have a barrel bushing marked with NM and I am not sure if that means national match or is the manufacturer.  I realy like this pistol but not sure how to proceed. I paid 600.0 for the gun and 800 rounds of loaded ammo.  Any inputs are appreciated.  John

Tough one, Bob. Especially tough for me as all my guns are shooters.  Still, as inexpensive 1911 platform guns are so prolific, the Ithica would likely end up in the safe. It's uncommon to find unaltered A1s in good condition these days. Shame yours has been altered. Nice pistol though!

Well now with the collector value gone it is what it is to be honest.  I would do the changes to up grade it your way and enjoy it.  Its still a neat old 1911 in 45acp with some hostory behind it.  I have a few guns like that were i enjoy having them any way.  Too bad you can't return it to its orginal state or can you?? I have seen older slides for sale and i could keep an eye out for you if you want one if its cheap.  cz

thanks for the replies.  The slide could be returned to original with a wider base sight. The frame, thats another story. I will keep it and shoot it and I may just enjoy it like an old friend and go buy a newer RIA for carry and defense.
