What's not functioning...so you get sparks out the hole, that aesthetics. Smaller hole throws spark also.  There's a hole there of course you going to get sparks.  That is correct functioning.  What do you expect to gain with a smaller hole.  You will never  notice the difference down range.

These two posts come from different past threads related to this topic, and I think the statements made in both are still valid.

Mike and I have used fuse from every on-line fireworks company, but the type we buy in quantity is the very hot 1/16" Chinese fuse from Pyrocreations at this website:            http://www.pyrocreations.com/ignition___fuses

The reason we like this fuse so much is that a #45 drill bit is perfect for an .082" dia. hole which will allow easy insertion of this small, but mighty, fuse which burns very hot and has not failed us even once.  We are 180 for 180 on successful firings of our 100 pounder Parrott seacoast gun.  For small cannon, a large hole is unnecessary and wasteful of what little pressure you have in a half inch dia. bore.  In our case and your's, smaller vent dias. are more efficient and look a heck of a lot better as well.

Good luck with what ever you decide on,

Tracy and Mike

FLYBYU,
There's also another consideration, and that's the appearance/scale of the vent. This stainless naval gun is 10-inches long, .50 cal., and it has a 1/8" vent, which in my opinion looks oversized for the barrel. I've been using 3mm visco fuse with this gun, but I'd like its looks a lot better if it had a smaller diameter vent.

The brass gun shown is 16 1/2-inches long, .91 caliber, and it has a 5/64" diam. vent, which to me looks a lot more in scale with the barrel. I use 1.8mm fuse with this gun.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.
