I did something to day I hadn't planned on...
« on: August 27, 2011, 02:27:44 AM »
I sold the rifle I had on consignment at my favorite gun shop and I was thoroughly planned to order a T/C Contender.  While I was hanging out there discussing my good fortune, I started looking at a very nice 3 screw .44 mag with a 7.5” barrel.   I came to the conclusion that it looked lonely and I should take it home.  So I put down the remaining $150 and claimed it as my own.

I'll post some pix later on.  Right now I'm still trying to figure out a cover story for my old lady...

I took it out an shot it yesterday and I have to admit I was a bit skittish in anticipation of the recoil but it wasn't bad.  I don't like the original grips and I will be changing them out for a set of rubber grips soon.  I was shooting 5" groups with it at 20 yards and with practice I think I can get them down a bit.  I'm sure the accuracy problem was the shooter and not the gun.  After about a half a box I was feeling a bit beat up...

Forgive my ignorance at what I bought.  I knew it was a 3-screw model when I got it but little more.  I looked up the serial number on the Ruger website and it's a Super Blackhawk made in 1969.  I'm seriously looking forward to carrying it during hunting season...

Tell her you didn't buy the Contender because you'd just end up buying a bunch of barrels for it, and that the Ruger is so much more economical in the long run. If that fails to impress, tell her you bought it because the way the bluing sparkles reminded you of her eyes in the moonlight, and you just couldn't pass it up after realizing how much it made you think of her.   ;D

Ah, nice find! OM Super Blackhawks are very well made!

I have one that was "Factory Refinished" and it's a great shooter.

Rubber Grips?  Oh, my..........   I wear a shooting glove on my "strong side" hand.

I have big hands but I'm a big guy (6'5") it makes sense.  Anyway I have Hogue grips on all my other handguns except my Colt and it came factory with what looks like Pacmyer grips.

Anyway I like the way the Hogues fit my hand.  I bought the wrong ones so now I have to wait a couple more days before I can have them installed...  I'll keep the original grips as well as the bag of original parts from when the transfer bar was installed.

Told my wife the 'new' 3 screw Sgl. Six is a collectable (true) and that I got a really good deal (true) and that she can shoot it whenever (true).
So far, so good.........but,

I figure I'll tell my wife about it in a few years and then when she sees it, I'll say "this old thing, I've it a long time..."

'69er! Good score.  I'm just the opposite of you.  My Predator came with Hogues and they made my whole arm hurt.  The recoil comes straight back.  I like the Ajax grips on this one, in the avatar.  The gun rotates in my hand and doesn't hurt.  I guess that's why there's more than one kind of grip  ;) .
Nice piece.

With a gun with recoil on the level of the 44 mag. I find it best to let your arm roll up with the gun in a controlled fashion. Let the recoil energy get burned up moving the gun.

If you reload you can load a good cast bullet like the "Keith Style" Lyman 429421 or the RCBS version over a lighter charge of powder like Unique. This are typically very accurate and easy to control and don't beat you up.
If you don't reload buy some 44 Special loads.
Save the heavy loads for hunting or long range shooting.

Nice gun by the way.
