Bond Arms

Does anyone have a Bond Derringer?  I wonder if they are shooters or just projectile launchers.  Even an Airlite Smith snubby can shoot when you practice.

The 3.5 inch "Snake Slayer" is on my want list.  My plan is to use .410 Win PDX exclusively in it, so it would be more of a point and shoot instead of single projectile type accuracy.  There are youtube videos of Bondarms guns being fired accurately but I cannot give first hand accounts at this time.

The two barrels on mine do not shoot to the same place at about 5-10 yards but are close enough to be quite usable.

I had one in .45 acp.  It was fun. But I decided I didnt want to trust it for self defence.  I think the .410 model would be pretty sweet though.

I think you are better off with the airweight/airlite snubby.  When you say practice, my friends and I practice at a 100 yd 12" gong with our snubbies, and we have a cadence (bang, 2, 3, dong; bang, 2, 3, dong.)  I think Derringers were meant for across the poker table.....

For what it's worth. I had 3 American Arms derringers , 2- 357 mag and 1- 44 mag and one Bond. My last one was a Bond 45/410 . First the airweight S&W is double action an advantage in any fight. The S&W weights less. The S&W holds 2 and a half times the ammo . The S7w Is easier to load. As for snake shot the bond shot doughnut patterns as did a TC I had. I have killed quite a few snakes with my J-frame and speer shot loads both factory and hand loaded.
If a fight you have to cock the BD for each shot , after the first shot you most likely will need to reposition the gun and cock it a slow process when someone is trying to kill you.
So why did I have 4 ? I see them as interesting guns from back in the day. Back then most were weak and shot rimfire rounds up to 41 cal. When nothing else was aval. that small that shot a large chunk of lead the 41 remington derringer was a good choice today there are far better options.

I have one in 45 Colt/ 410. Is it my day to day carry gun, no, but I do have it stashed away for a back up gun.  As for accuracy, I would keep the shots under 10 yards. Trigger pull is very hard and awkward.  If I had a choice between a Bond arms and another gun, I would take another gun. But I just had to have one in my arsenal. We all now there are better choices, but sometimes we just like the idea of having another gun.  8)

Bond derringers ought not be called derringers.  They're huge.  I keep waiting on someone to make a classic derringer in the orignial size.  The only one I know of is the junky Davis.

So what are you calling   "... a classic derringer in the orignial size."  President Lincoln was shot with an original Derringer, Then the .41 cal Remington Rimfire Derringer was about the size of the 3 inch barreled mini Bond Arms Derringer.

These people make a derringer that you might find more to your liking, but look closely at the Bond Arms before you decide

I have fired one in 45 colt/410 and the best I can say is OUCH! Recoil with the .45 colt cowboy action level loads were not too bad, but hits were tough past about 5 yards.  The .410 loads were just painful and the shot spread would have been of little use beyond a few feet.  It did seem to be a very well made derringer and was quite heavy.

A derringer at best is a very close to contact weapon. A knife may be a better choice since you don't have to cock it and it can stick more than 2 times with out loading.

Have owned three American Derringers. 45-70 over a 410/45LC Alaskan Survival model, (someone mentioned ouch from shooting something) a  410/45LC over a 410/45LC Alaskan Survival model and a 38 sp over a 38 sp. All very nice derringers and fun to play with but as a lightweight concealable defensive weapon I'll go with my Airweight S&W 38 sp. I had some 180 gr lead bullets loaded over 4.0 gr of Unique that I tried in it. It shoots them very well so I keep it and a speed loader loaded with them close by at all times.

Nothing like bringing a knife to a gun fight..  ;D

Sometimes bringing a gun to a knife fight works out bad. Think up close and personal , you can grab a gun and keep it from fireing . You can grab a knife and lose fingers etc. just saying ................ ;)

I'll take my chance with a gun first. I also have a knife as a back up anyways..
