Slightly cratered primers with factory loads
« on: December 12, 2011, 03:42:36 AM »
Never had this happen before. Both brands I've tried in my Model 111 .270 show slight cratering. The load are 130 gr Winchester Power Points and Federal blue box 130's. I know the 270 is a high pressured round, but this seems odd. I see no indication of wear or erosion of the firing pin aperture in the bolt face and while the rifle has seen some use it hasn't been alot. I'm thinking of slugging the bore to see if she's tighter than she should be. anybody have this happen to them? Ever find the cause?

As a matter of fact I have on the 2506 with factory loads. It really isn't that big a deal, and is basically indicating a hot, but not too hot load. Some folks get excited and start thinking excess chamber pressure, but it is not always the case. Some loads just crater the primer due to slight velocity increases in the particular loading with the particular powder. Too, the run of primers could be a little soft.

Also could be from a slightly large factory fireing pin hole.  No problems at all.  Larry

Also could be from a slightly oversized factory fireing pin hole in the bolt face, no problems I think.  Larry
