Daughter shooting Sig Sauer Steel Challenge today!
« on: November 12, 2011, 04:44:18 AM »
... and I'm one proud Papa. She's in her 2nd year at the Coast Guard Academy. She sailed NCAA dinghys last year but the time requirements were high so this year she tried out for the Combat Shooting team, one of 2 girls that made it. Now for her it's a big deal because it's very much a male team, and she's not a tomboy, and hasn't met a guy yet up to her standards to even hold hands ... not from lack of opportunity, she's beautiful, 19, just has really really high standards (ok with me). The guys love having her on the team, she'll learn from anyone, and is an excellent marksman, and they're very protective of her ... it doesn't get much better for Dad knowing 20 marksmen are all looking out for your girl. And alot of them are in bible study with her. But I digress ...

They're shooting the Scholastic Steel Challenge at the Sig Sauer Academy today, her first ever. Her team all shoots Sig Sauer 226s standard Coast Guard issue. But she saw a 1911 at the pro shop and liked it, so theirs hope for her yet.

Great news, I love to see girls get involved in the shooting sports too, I'm sure you are one proud papa. We kept a girl for several years after her father kicked her out. She took to shooting very well, all 100 lbs of her. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

She did very well, especially for her first SC competition. She wants to go to the range with me next time shes on leave ... oh well, I suppose. :D

The guys on the team are trying to get her into ARs now ... but she commented that it seems like all they do is clean them, polish them, fondle them and buy accessories for them, like a man-barbie. That's my girl! :D

Thursday she shot service rifle (M16A2) for qual with horrible ammo, double feed after double feed.  (not her fault)  She'll get another try Monday afternoon with a different lot.

The team will be filling out a CHRISTmas list with a team match shirt at the top.  M&P 9Pro pistols will help as well, she'll give you the info soon.  We are getting them ready for the upcoming IDPA Indoor Winter Nationals, two upcoming SSC events and the Joint Service Academy Combat Weapon Competition in March.   Also, the duty gun is a P229R-DAK in .40S&W.  For the match they shot the M&P, next on the purchase list is Apex competition kits to smooth out those triggers.

Let me know if you have a holiday photo request, her wielding dual 1911's or an MG34?

Regards,
Gunner

Thanks Gunner! Appreciate your hopping on here and giving us an update. Can't tell you how happy I am she's on the Team. My competition days are on hold ... probably until retirement (rank has its prohibitions) ... but I can live vicariously through her experiences!

And you can make all the excuses you want for the M16A2 ... :D She can give you my background with those.

Post up pictures here if you can - it'll do some folks good here to see the next generation of shooters. Heck, we might start tracking stats, and swapping team lineups, etc. Much better than football!

Alright, she ended up with the same lot of ammo and had two jams tonight.  Nothing big she held on and didn't let it scramble the mental game, just kept punching the center.  I'll let her tell you the score but I'll give you a spoiler, she's got some "Bling" for the uniform.   As for the photo op she just happened to have her phone on her and I had her pose duel wielding two match 1911's in one and the other with an MG34.   It wasn't until she grabbed the MG that I told her I found your post about you brag'in on your baby girl shooting, what I posted and what she needed to do with the photo's.

Don't ever give up on competitions and say they are over.  I know a guy in his late 80's that finally made his CMP pistol goals.   There is a young pilot at the AirSta where you are that also shoots matches in highpower rifle.   There are plenty of folks to sit around and enjoy the time with on the line or in the pits.  The new generation needs the leadership and the mentoring, get out there.

Oh, she did so well in the year that she gets to skip some of her finals?  My shooters have the highest GPA at the Academy.   8)

Outstanding! Thanks Gunner, and I'll be glad to chat with her tonight. Can't wait to see the pictures! Can she keep a firearm at the academy?

I've shot IHMSA and PPC/IDPA/IPSC, and quite a bit more professionally in uniform. I'd actually given up on Jess ever shooting; I never pushed, and it seemed like she only went shooting to make me happy. She spent about 1/2 hour picking out her new eye pro over thanksgiving - for the record, I found the pink lenses for her.

Gunner, keep it up! Highest GPA on campus is telling. You'd think shooting and sailing would be the prominent sports at the COAST GUARD Academy ... just saying'
