What bullet weight for a .308 "pistol?"
« on: November 30, 2011, 10:31:24 AM »
I say "pistol," because my .308 handi has a 16.5" barrel. Hodgdon's velocity figures are for 15-inch "pistols," or 24-inch rifles. Thus, it makes much more sense for me to look at pistol velocities than rifle velocities (plus it gives me truly conservative numbers for estimations).

My girlfriend recently got an invite for us to go hog hunting sometime (yeah, she's that cool :P ). That, couple with my waning interest in longer-range precision shooting, has led me to set up my .308 for closer-range affairs. I removed the bipod, went to a red-dot scope I had lying around (ideally I'd probably like a 2x scope, but that can come later) and switched to a "tactical" two-point sling setup that stays around me the whole time, whether just carrying or actual shooting, largely for quick access and retention in case a hog decides to get mean.

So, I am looking at maybe 200yds max anymore, and such a hit would really only need to be on like a 12" target. Would it be worth it going up to like 180gr bullets at around 2100fps for general use (would still use 147s for practice as the zero wouldn't change much inside these ranges), or would a more standard 150-168gr bullet still be better (at around 2500 and 2300fps, respectively)? I suppose I am largely thinking of hogs. But, are these velocities enough to open up the heavier bullets?
And then on smaller animals like deer, would the heavier bullets give more "thump" at these velocities, or would too much energy be wasted beyond the deer while a wider-expanding ~150gr bullet would do better?
*edit*

I guess to sum it up, do I need to go up in bullet weight for these uses, or would a decent ~150gr bullet be plenty?

I have used the 130 grain Barnes TTSX with my 30-30 Handi at around 2450 fps with a lot of success on deer and hogs. You should be able to get 2700 fps with the same bullet. Would make a good 200 yard load.

So am I over-estimating the thickness of their hides / breastplates, or at least the difficulty a decent bullet would have getting through them?

I am not sure the size range of hogs here in Oklahoma.

You are talking about feral hogs, not Russian boar. As a child my family raised thousands, I have watched my father kill many with a butcher knife. They have a very sloped forehead and any angled shot may well produce a riccochet, a straight on shot with a 22mag FMJ will put one down. Very old boars may have a heavy layer of gristle around their shoulders, but standard lung/heart shots broadside should pose no problems. I would look at just 150-165 gr range, medium velocity.

Read this article on Texas Boars, it explains why feral hogs are reputed to be so tough, when in reality, the kill zone just isn't as big as everyone thinks and they just don't hit them well.

Aaah okay. Yeah I was indeed thinking of the several-hundred-pound animals you hear stories about. But, generall, I should be fine with my standard ~150gr@2400-2500fps loads?

Most places I hunt it would not be rare to see a 200 plus pound boar but the best eating ones are half that weight and less. Most deer calibers are suitable for hogs. I always like the tougher bullets for hogs simply because I hope for an exit wound. If a tracking job is required, the exit wound may help promote a better blood trail. Not always though with hairy hogs.

Check out the ballistics for T/C pistols.  T/C uses 16" barrels on the Encore, and they make .308 barrels.  So you can get a direct comparison.  Rog

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

JM   I used a 18" barreled AP4 LR308 to punch through a 1400 lb. buffalo twice using 150gr inter-bond Hornadys' ... My brother got last minute notice that he would have the days off to come home to have thanksgiving with the family and on the drive decided he wanted to go hog hunting in Oklahoma.. Long story short , my sis-in-law and I were both running 308s , while I didnt get my hog she did and with a 150gr Federal it was clean through dead right there on a 140+ lb hog..  So my vote is stay with a good 150gr , No A-MAXs just a solid SP will do.

As far as hide thickness Last 250+ I took, when we got to peeling the hide from his shoulder area it made the same sound as thumping your knuckle on wood , they have toughness to them when they get into those larger numbers , and you DO want a pass through they dont really like to bleed from a chest wound... And tracking one with only the entry hole bleeding sucks .. I hear the neck shot is the preffered shot by alot of guys that live in thick pig country due to great blood trails but more so that they usually drop on the spot.

I think any good bullet 150gr. or heavier would do the job. Try a few different bullets and see what shoots best in your rifle. Also make sure you are familiar with the anatomy of the hogs. It seems that alot of hunters misjudge the size or location of the heart/lungs area and make less than perfect shot placement.

Feral hogs are NOT the mythical creature that Internet lore and todays romanticized television shows make them out to be. As Tim points out, they do have a somewhat smaller, and slightly differently situated vital area than whitetails of equal size, and precision shot placement is king.

Secondly, 99% of the time, hogs are hunted from stands, or still hunting, just like deer, do not concern yourself with close quarters combat type situations. Unless they are wounded or antagonized, they run the opposite direction, just like any other wild animal. Take a good clean initial shot and claim your vittles with no additional conflict.

Thirdly, your 308 with 150 grain fodder is plenty sufficient. I have killed thousands of feral hogs with knives (and dogs), bows, pistols, and rifles from .22 rim fire to fire breathing magnums. You put the "bullet" in the right spot, and it will do its part just fine.

So the target area is small, and in the "wrong" place. No wonder they have a bullet-proof reputation.
Leaving the hog hunts behind and going back to the original question.I shot a lot of .308's out of an XP-100 with a 15" barrel and I will add one point:
With a factory load a lot of powder doesn't burn until after it leaves the barrel.
Enough in fact that you and anyone nearby will think a concussion grenade went off.
That sounds like a joke. It isn't funny for very long.

I think in your case any size bullet above 125grs will ruin a hogs day with a well placed shot. Check out the faster burning powder loads, they do not have as much muzzle blast and concussion. And always make sure the muzzle of your neat little "shorty" is out the window of your truck before you touch a round off and blow the windshield out of its rubber seal!, and no ,I will not tell you how I know this to be a fact ;D

Hahaha! I won't be trying any in-the-car shots any time soon, I hope!
And yeah, while I do only use starting loads of a somewhat fast powder (H335), the muzzle blast is still pretty intense :) .
But thanks for the advice, guys! So a 150gr @ 2500fps should still get the job done?

BTW, I wanted to clarify about the 12" target thing. I just meant that occasionally I will still mess with the gongs at the range, one of which is 12" at 200 yards. I did not mean to imply that I think the vitals of feral hogs are 12" in diameter :) . Especially with the red dot, I probably wouldn't take a shot beyond ~100 yards.
