if you want to learn some stuff about the 260.get a reloading book and check out the long range ballistic tables.if what i remember is correct, a 140 grn bullet out of the 260 will drop about the same within a inch or so as a 30-06 150 grn bullet at 300 yrds.thats pretty impressive performance considering your using anywhere from 10 to 15 grns less powder in a mild recoiling gun.the 260 is nothing more than a modern rendition of the 6.5x55.carmichael invented the catridge i imagine to take advantage of the 6.5 ballistics in a modern higher pressure cartridge that couldnt be stuck in the old krag rifles and such.i dont know much about the new savage guns, but what i hear is they are a inexpensive rifle that shoots as good as a rifle costing much more.

So its safe to assume you find the cartridge to be useful. What has your experience been like with it on game? Thanks for the response and the pictures much appreciated.

cases are easy to make out of 308 or 243 if you can,t find 260,s. i bought 200 cases and have not ran out yet. i have killed ground hogs, deer and they died, but the  129sst,s are very destructive if you don,t hit the animal right,i am going to try the 140sst,s at a little less speed for deer size animals. eastbank.

I shot a deer with a 180 grain Hornady SST out of a 300wsm at all of 20 yards and it was rather destructive you could crawl inside that deer and sleep. I have found that the SST while lethal does an ungodly amount of internal damage no matter the caliber. I hear tell they are less destructive at longer ranges but have yet to find out. Now I shoot 175 grain Berger VLD's in the short mag and the 190 VLD's in my Ultra Mag have yet to try them in my Ruger 300 Win Mag. My friend just borrowed my Ultra mag for Elk season and he killed a 4 point raghorn bull at 150yds with it and it did the job it turned to go uphill and spun right around and tumbled all the way to the bottom of the clearcut. Luckily right into the ditch of the road. The damage from the Ultra Mag was not bad it left an exit whole you could stick your fist through but the meat wasn't badly blood shot at all.

danny, I know several guys who have .260 Remington rifles and it's on my shortlist for an effective all around cartridge for eastern hunting for deer, black bear and hogs.

There's a good article at:

have a 260 on a savage 10 with an adams & bennett barrel. the first 3 shots were under an inch with remington 140 pspcl bullets and h1000 powder. it is becoming my go to gun. shoots great ,easy on sholder and wallet, and impressive balistics when you look past 100 yards equalling if not surpassing the 270.

All that with less recoil. It really is an interesting round. I just have to many wants and not near enough money.

danny, if you have a Savage 10 series rifle that you are not using or can get one cheap it is an awfully easy process to swap barrels.

Shaw barrel kits can be had for under $200 with the nut, wrench and headspace gauges.  I know some folks have felt that they aren't as accurate as they could be but I also know that a lot of folks are getting roughly 1 MOA or better from the Shaw tubes.

Last week I tried to buy a 7mm-08 from a friend that wasn't shooting well to re-barrel it to 260 Rem but he'd already sold it.

Bought my Ruger M77 MKII SS/Syn 260 Rem back about 12 years ago. My son more or less claimed it a few years later when I bought my 25-06 a Ruger M77 MKII Wal/Blue. I had very good hunts with it, and my son got 2 whitetails a few weeks back in Nebraska. One of the two was lasered @ 280 yds. It's zeroed @ about 250 yds and is plus/minus 2.5 - 3" all the way out to 300 yds. I have also used the 129 gr SST with great results. Needless to say I highly recommend it.
The only real downside is the availability of factory ammo. I reload, so I have no issues whatsoever with it.
Dave.

I have the 260 Remington in T/C Encore rifle with an MGM 24" barrel, 1:8 twist.  Scoped with a Leupold 2.5X8 Varx III.  It has proven very effective and handy in the woods of Western NY deer country.  I have taken 3 whitetails with it this year, all about 50 yds using Nosler 130 gr Accubonds and Sierra 120 ProHunter.  Published velocity from Reloading Manuals is 2,760fps and 2,800fps respectively.  All were one shot kills and very destructive performance.
Have not had the opportunity to try it on deer at longer ranges but look forward to the opportunity.  Hope this helps.

I had a Jap. Arisaka rebarreled in 260 Rem. I have shot several deer with it from short range to 300 yrds. The 260 has become my primary gun over my Rem. 700 in .270. The Jap. is lighter to carry and with an E.R. Shaw barrel, will out shoot the 270. The fact that it doesn't kick just lets me shoot it more at the range making me even more comfortable with the gun and more confident with it.
Oh and as someone else stated, Mine likes vargit powder too. At 100 yrds. it will and does clover leaf. I only took a few shots at 200yrds. and it held to an inch or so. I love my 260!!!!!
