New 25-06 Handi, what can I expect?
« on: December 06, 2011, 01:01:55 PM »
I just picked up anew Handi in 25-06 this week for 229.00  8)
What can I expect for accuracy? I haven't had one of these since the
Topper model 30-30 /20 gauge combo I had when I was 12 (& wish I still had it!)
Anxious to get loading and give it a work out.
Anyone got any favorite loads to share? I current.y have 85 & 100 grain Nolsers in the cave

Hi Jim, and welcome,
I have never tried a 25'06 Handi, but my Savage 110 would make nice small groups out to 300 yards.  I stopped using rifles after about 5 years working with the 25'06.  Whether deer or coyote, if I could see it I could kill it.

Since my .22K Hornet Handi regularly puts 5 shot into dime sized targets at 100 yards I would expect the 25'06 to do similar
keep em talkin' while I reload

Welcome!! Here's a recent discussion, I've never bothered to reload for mine, it shoots all factory ammo too good to bother!! Spend some time in the FAQs and help sticky to get the best out of it and you'll be happy.  ;)

Here's a light bullet load that I have saved that Hildy worked up several years ago.

Thanks! I found those 2 threads earlier today   ;)
I got 100 rounds of brass on order, chomping at the bit to go shoot the new girl.
last 25 I had was on a FN Mauser 98. Gun has since been given a complete custom build and is now a 280 Rem.
The old 25-06 barrel had no rifling left in the first 5 inches, and it still shot 3/4 inch groups  8)

Jim- congrats on the new gun. My load of choice with my handi is with 120 speer hot core bullets. I never tried the 100 grain as I have a 243 which shoots the 100 grain and gor the 25-06 for a little extra power for deer. I use h4350 at 47 grains which is near max. Not a barn burner but gets me a little over 2800 ft second and less than 1" 3 shoot groups at 100 yards. FYI THIS LOAD WORKS FOR MY HANDI BUT WORK UP TO THIS LOAD FOR YOUR;

I got a 25-06 last year and like it.  I worked up a load using the Nosler 110gr Accubond, and Retumbo powder.  Can not remember the powder weight off the top of my head, but I am getting very good results.  I use Retumbo for the velocities, and it is designed to give consistant velocities at extreame tempatures.  Living in Alaska I hunt in extreames.  The 110gr bullet, has the best bullet coefficent of the 25s.  Retains velocity and energy better than all the others.

Four out of five shots will be touching at 200 yards, my sight in distance for the calibrated Tactical Scope I use.  I also have a level on the scope to assure I am holding the gun level.  400 to 700 yards I can hit a gallon milk jug every shot if I do my part.  Sometimes I get sloppy and miss, not the guns fault.  Wind will get me sometimes.  The 25-06 is affected more by wind than my 30-06, plague of the lighter bullet.  But the 25-06 is becoming my go to gun during the winter when I don't have to worry about Bears.  (Still want to take a Grizzly with a .17).

As for the cartridge, most of the wolf hunters and wolf hunting guides swear by this cartridge.  It has the range and the energy to do the job on out to 500 and 700 yards, without serious damage to the pelts.  Wolf pelts bring high doller.

An O-ring under the forearm, and changing to a thumbhole stock, is the only thing I have done to mine.  I bought it off the internet.  It came with a 26" barrel, and a beat up pallet wood stock.  BUT IT HAD EJECTORS, so I bought it.

Sourdough,
Thanks for the info. Can you explain more on the o-ring under the fore end?
I've been eyeballing a thumb hole from Boyds already, and just ordered one for my Rem 700 .308 earlier this week

Welcome to gbo. :)  I have had 2 25.06's and both were good shooters. Spend some time in the FAQ's and most of your questions will be answered. ;) :D

The purpose of the O-ring is to keep the foreare from contacting the barrel.  Being a plumber I have O-ring kits in my shop.  You can find them in any hardware store.  Find one that is just smaller than the post on the bottom of the barrel, so it fits snug.  It needs to be think enough to keep the wood from making contact with the metal, yet not so big that it keeps the forearm too far away.  You need to slid a doller (or a piece of notebook paper) between the forearm and barrel.
