HELP..TCR Mag modifications
« on: May 24, 2012, 05:26:05 AM »
TC, no longer makes modifications to TCR's. My problem ; I have two 7mm Rem. mag barrels , one original , shinny blue and one later model , flat black. Neither barrel has the magnum pin. The brite blue one never had the pin and the flat black one has the pin sheared off.
My need; Does anyone know the deminsion of the pin and specs on placement.

while we are here..any idea of how many TCR's were produced?

The pin was so that the barrel could not be used on a non mag receiver. I was told by Ed's contenders that TC made very few mag receivers. At one time you could send in receiver and have it modifyed but all they did was cut a slot in the locking block and mark it mag. I have one of the barrels that is matt finished and ed removed the pin and I shoot a reduced load in it. The dark blue finished barrel is off a TCR 83 as they were all high gloss blue where as the TCR 87 were a matt finish and called a Hunter. The 83 had set triggers and the 87 had only one trigger. The 83 also had a snapon forend and the 87 was removed with a screw but the snapon forend will also fit the 87, dont know how many were made as the plant that made them had a fire in 93 I think and TC never retooled to continue making them. they still show up at gun showes from time to time and there are some that show up here from time to time. I have an 87 and there are a number of members that have them. They shoot great and are a nice looking rifle.

Back when TC was making Magnum receivers and modifying non-Magnum receivers one of the Custom Shop gunsmiths explained the difference between them to me. There is more than just cutting a slot in the bolt.  He said there is no difference in strength, but under the higher recoil of a magnum cartridge the bolt of a non-Magnum receiver can move and the action can open. The bolts in the Magnum receivers are locked in place so they cannot move because of recoil. I have both non-Magnum and Magnum receivers and there is a easily seen difference in their operation. If one opens, that is, breaks over the barrel of a non-Magnum action gun, the opening lever springs back to the center position. If one does the same with a Magnum gun, the lever stays to the side. Also, either a non-Magnum or a Magnum gun can be opened by moving the lever either right or left.

Thanks ; ones with wisdom. I have a few TCR's . One is factory modified "Mag".  the others are std. The mag modified works as you stated..very reassuring. So I guess I can use my 7mm Mag barrels (without the pin) on my mag action. Makes sense..(couldn't figure out how that pin could keep action from opening). Have to go now...would like to continue conversation later.....including stock desigh , forends...etc....They are a nice rifle....

I bought my TCR-83 in n1985, with a 7MM Mag barrel back before they were doing the mag mod.  In 1992 or 93 when they announced the mod for MAG I sent my frame in to have it modified, and ordered a .338 Win Mag barrel at the time.  But the gun handled the 7MM Mag just fine before the mod.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
