Questions On Boring Rifle Barrel To Shotgun Barrel
« on: December 08, 2011, 06:02:53 AM »
I have acquired a T/C New Englander rifle barrel with a very rough bore. I plan on having this barrel bored out to a smoothbore shotgun barrel.

I'd like to find someone with a T/C New Englander shotgun barrel that can measure the wall thickness of the barrel. I'm thinking this should be easily done with a digital caliper.

Having done some research, the Outside Diameter of the barrel is .935. If I subtract the inside diameter of a 10 gauge, .775, this leaves me with a wall thickness of .08. If i subtract the inside diameter of a 12 gauge, .729, this leaves me with a wall thickness of .103.

The formula I used to arrive at these numbers is (Outside Diameter-Inside Diameter)/2.

Taking measurements of the wall thickness of modern 12 gauge smokeless powder shotguns, I get a barrel wall thickness range from .06 to .075.

If I'm not missing anything, I should be able to safely bore my rifle barrel to a 10 gauge black powder shotgun .

Does anyone see anything that I'm missing ? Errors in my calculations ?

Thanks !

Fred

the biggest thing i can see that ya missed is breechplug thread size for 50 or 54 cal are probably only 5/8ths or 3/4ths inch in diameter. doubt t/c has any plugs for the 12ga to sell ya but maybe ya could get by with just boring down to the threads and use the existin' plug. for what it's worth and luck to ya friend, bubba.

Bubba;

Thats exactly what I had planned on doing, having it bored down to just in front of where the threads  begin, allowing enough room not to compromise the threads.

Thanks !

The only concern I would have is the steel the barrel is made of.  If it is the right alloy, and if it was properly heat treated to still contain the pressures of shooting with that thin of a wall.  Other than that, sounds like a plan.
