:D FLOOMRIDER!!!!  I just weighed five balls, and the average is 45 grns for a .310 dia ball.  U should get 777.77 per your five lbs of lead.,or in my terms, probably about 700 balls,  At any rate, thats a lot of powder and lead going downrange.  HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEH 8)   King

#0 and #1 Buck shot from Hornady
« Reply #1 on: December 22, 2002, 11:15:53 AM »
Hornady Lead shot, about $8.00 per 5 lbs.

   0 BUCK,  .320",                 9   =  approx no. of  pellets in 1 oz.
                            9 x 16 = 144 = approx no. of  pellets in 1 lb.
                          144 x 5 = 720 = approx no. of  pellets in 5 lbs.

   1 BUCK,  .300",                 11  =  approx no. of  pellets in 1 oz.
                           11 x 16 = 176 = approx no. of  pellets in 1 lb.
                          176 x 5 = 880 = approx no. of  pellets in 5 lbs.

I am new to the sport of the .32 cal!!

Santa is bringing me a Traditions Crockett Rifle in .32 cal.

I've got 400 Hornady 0.310" RB's and about 650 110 grain conicals from www.muzzleloader.biz

So until CHRISTmas day I can only "dream" about making smoke with my new BP rifle!!

P.S. if either the #0 or #1 Buck shot from Hornady shoots in my Crockett...that by far seem to me to be the cheapest route. I am no stranger to bullet casting, I have bullet molds for 9mm, .38/.357, .44SP/Mag, .45LC, .45ACP, 45/70. I thought about getting a RB mold in 0.310 or 0.311" but after finding out about the Hornady buck shot...hmmmnnn seems to be as cheap with no time invested in casting.
If it shoots.....it must be good!

You guys with the .32s should get with ol' Tenbears over at alloutdoorschat.com .  He had some sabots custom made and fires .277 bullets in his .32 .  Outshoots some of the CF boys at 300 yards!!

Just thought this might be of interest to you.  Merry Christmas!

:D Real Bow.  Ya might find the .300 to shoot ok with a thick patch.,which should not be to hard to do.  If ya have a .32 then ya gots .020 of patch to make up.  Pillow ticking should fill the bill there, let me know how thos undersize ones shoot,im curious.  The .320 balls might be a problem,so I would try those undersize ones.  I have a Crockett rifle, and I hope you like yours as well as I like mine.  Good luck...King

Real Bow, I don't think using Hornady shot/buckshot would provide much accuracy in your little squirrel rifle, and you might have problems with leading due to the antimony in the shot, they are not pure lead, as far as I know, and are hardened so as not to deform. Might even erode your barrel after a while. Perhaps, someone with more experience can chime in here. I'm looking myself for a flinter in .32 so It'll be a learning experience. RR

:-D .32 fans.  I dont like to take any shortcuts with the ammo.  I just purchase the commercial rb fer mine, and have not experianced any problems.  I know its cheaper to by the various sizes of buckshot, but it is not pure lead.,and when ya figure out how much yer rifle cost and the damage that ya might do ya end up further ahead with the rb made for em.  Just my two cents.  King

in the muzzleloading caplock rifle by ned roberts. his table(pg145) shows 160 .310 balls to the pound so for 5 pounds you should get about 800 balls

That's right jrdavis...

....and for a #1 Buck:

#1 BUCK, .300", 11 = approx no. of pellets in 1 oz.
11 x 16 = 176 = approx no. of pellets in 1 lb.

176 x 5 = 880 = approx no. of pellets in 5 lbs.

Now, I haven't tried any of the above "buckshot" in my Crockett. Probably won't!! I've got equipment to cast my own, and it will be pure lead...no Lyman #2 Alloy here!!
If it shoots.....it must be good!

Not a bad deal is right Grump!!

I got (665) 110 grain Maxi's for $30 TOTAL, shipping included.

So far, at 14 yards (in my basement!), I've shot bullets-touching groups!!

Soon I shall venture outside and see what they'll do behind 30 - 40 grains of Goex FFFg.
If it shoots.....it must be good!

Real bow
let us know how those maxie's shoot ...I wonder how a 30  cast bullet would shoot out of that barrel any body tried that. even like the one Lyman makes for the 30 carbine or 7.62x39? most of those molds throw a .311 bullet.

Don't know about the 0.311",

These Maxi's I got "mike" at 0.322" on the driving band, and 0.320" at the base. Per Bruce's recommendation I've been using an Ox-Yoke "Wonder Wad" in front of the powder charge.

Nothing conclusive yet, until I shoot at 25 and 50 yards, it's all speculation.

what I was thinking was to put a paper patch on a 130 gr 30 cal cast bullet
and use a grease cookie between it and the powder ...seem like it ought to work; be something to play with any way.

well I don't know. I think the mold I have cast a bullet 1/2 to 5/8 inch long it's a round nose . from what real bow says they shoot ok at 14 yards. the question is how far out can you shoot them before they start cork screwing? .311 with a paper patch (couple strips of paper forming an x with the bullet pushed down the middle) might work ok.

:D   YUP,it might.  I tried shooting by 650 grn conicals that I shoot in my BPCR,in my .50 cal muzzleloader.  About 40 percent of the time up to 30 yards, they would be point on.  I got a lot of targets that show a perfect profile, at 50 yrds.  The thing that I found interesting is that a number of times, the sideways slug shot same point of aimpact as the point on slug.(at 25 yards) .  Now,dont ya think a slug that big hitting sideways would be kinda devastating ?  After about 30 yards it was anyones guess on how they would shoot, all over the target.  Thats why I said it would be interesting to see what they would do in that little .32.  They are from a SAECO mould and are 1.33 " in length, and weigh in at 650grns,and were fun to experiament with!!!!! :o  :o King
