Congrats on the new rifle, you'll love the 17hmr, it's like getting your first 22 rimfire when you were a kid! Most everyone I know that has a 17hmr has at least a 4x-12x variable, many have much more than that on them. It just depends on what you intend to do with it. If you like making little tiny groups of holes in paper at 100yds or more, an 8x-32x or a 36x won't be too much. If you just want to plink, which the 17hmr does great, but is expensive to do, a 3x-9x will do. I have 3 hmrs, have 4x-16x, 4x-18x and 8.5x-25x on them, mostly shoot ground squirrels at 75-250yds. My favorite to shoot is my CZ452 American with a bushnell elite 4200 4-16x40 scope mounted with medium burris signature zee rings.
