.270 Win or 7mm-08 for deer/elk and long range target shoot
« on: January 29, 2003, 07:35:19 AM »
I enjoy long range target shooting- 300yd+ and also wnat good cartridge for deer and elk hunting.  The 270 seems like the rifle options are numerous.  Anyone suggest another cartridge for this purpose that would be better?

Certainly someone could suggest another cartridge than the 270 or 7mm-08, and possibly argue its merits on some of the finer points of target shooting. But your choices are certainly top-of-the-line in terms of doing the job you indicate (target shooting 300+ yards, deer and elk hunting). You will have good bullet selection, even in factory loads, for the 270 and the 7mm. I think there is much more to be gained in choosing the model/style of rifle and quality optics than in choosing another caliber.

Just my opinion, of course! 8)

Both caliber's that you've already chosen are excellent especially within 300 yards though for 300 yards to say 500 to 600 yards I personally would jump up to a 7 mm mag or a 300 ultramag in order to get a flatter trajectory and more knock down power.
