Fake Christmas trees?
« on: December 06, 2011, 03:52:38 AM »
The kids are gone. So now I want to stop buying real trees as our Christmas tree. How much do you have to spend to get a pretty nice one that looks decent and will last? Do you have any tips on buying one?

My cost numbers are old, but if you get one with lights, make sure there is plug in the light string that matches up with the tree's ferrule joint, or that you are comfortable adding one.

Got mine on sale after Christmas. Got tired of it after about 5 years.

We went artificial after the kids were all gone but AFTER Christmas is the time to buy one. Ours looks green til you plug it in then it's all lit up with various colored lites. Patty still hangs ornaments on it. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

We always had real trees ! For several years they were live and we planted them in our yard or a city park after Christmas. This year, since we are not going south I am looking at a set of two small Palm trees complete with lights just to compensate for a Nova Scotia winter. :(

After years of getting the needles out of the carpet after CHRISTMAS we went artificial.
Still decorate them but after it is all over, just put it in the basement til next year.

If you have never seen what happens when a real Christmas tree catches fire--you should.  There is a video that has been going around for years that shows how fast and how hot a Christmas tree can burn.  I never did like having a real tree in the house and after I saw that video at one of our plant saftey meetings, I would never, never, never allow one in my house.

Anyway, the only thing I can add to the above posts is to compare needle count, which is generally on the box somewhere, to get some comparison of quality.

My wife has two, or three of those things (trees) and I don't get involved if I can help it.

Not only real trees but real candles and sparklers !!  :)

Gosh, all of Germany must have burned down over many Christmas seasons before all of that artificial stuff with electric lights.

Living in Alaska, we can not get a live tree that has not been frozen.  Too big a fire hazard, once it thaws.  We went artificial in 1985.  Over 40 years I went on too many Christams tree fires in base housing.

When Sky was small the wife bought a huge 15 footer.  I decorated half if it from the second floor balcony.  We used it till Sky was in High School.  Sky and I developed a hatred for that thing.  It suddenly disappeared, wonder what happened to it?  So then the wife got a smaller 8 ft tree.  Last year Sky revolted, he refused to get it out of the shed.  He said "Mom, you make such a big production at Christmas I hate it"!  So Sky went to Wal-Mart, and came home with a small three ft tree with lights and decorations already installed.  He opened the box, set the tree on a small table, plugged it in and said "We're good to go".  I agreed.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Conan, we bought one after Christmas about 8-9 years ago. Bought it at a Sears store, under $100.(I think with tax it was alittle over $90) Before Christmas, it was a $200 tree. Still looks good, wife and kids decorate it up on Thanksgiving, and it's down in the cold room in our basement by New Years Day. I miss a real tree, but not the extra vacuming. :D gypsyman

I know of a family that had a Christmas tree fire a few years ago. They burried 4 kids on boxing day. I would never have a real tree in my home.

They should probably not have anything with an open flame around. How much sense does it take not to leave a real tree unattended if there is a heat source on or nearby it. ::)

FAKE!
The Kids have kids of their own now........Let them worry about a tree ;)

Actually the wife is decorating happy! She still does a small artificial one, with a few lights in the yard.
A few years ago she had a monster one that took a long time to put together and decorate. It did look real, but was too big and had to go.I started to take it apart and take to the dump, but got the bright idea to plant it in the front yard. Everyone that saw that tree remarked about how pretty it was  and wanted to know what kind of tree it was. I told everyone it was phony fir. You'd be surprised how many bought that Bull!

I left the thing in the ground for about two years, and a darn little bird even nested in it one year......(True story).
I tried to talk the wife into letting me do away with all her flowers and going fake on them too.Save a bundle on the water and fertilizer bill. She wouldn't go for it. Women ;)
