model should I look for?? I'll be hunting whitetail deer mostly with the occasional Mule deer and hog--looking for one in 25 06

I kinda like the sporter 'cause they have the open sites in case my scope fails I'll still be able to hunt...

what do you think

I am in the same boat as you...looking at all the configurations of Ruger #1s and trying to decide which one to buy first.  The Standard model has no iron sights and a 26" barrel while the HB Varmint rig has no sights and a 24" barrel, not sure why they'd shorten the barrel for a varmint rig and I think you can benefit from a 26" tube in the .25-06.  Sporter versions have iron sights and a 22" tube.  I think I would get a standard 26" no sights model-they handle just super and if I want iron sights I will probably want a receiver rear sight anyway not the factory iron.
A .45-70 in the sporter model along with a standard model .25-06 would be an awesome combo!  8)

I've got a 1-V in 25-06 and it's a good shooter.  It does seem pretty dumb to use a shorter barrel on a varmint gun.  I was orginally looking for a stainless standard 25-06 when I found the 1-V.  I paid $550 for it with a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x40.  Trouble is, I still yearn for that stainless standard with the longer barrel.  Maybe someday.  BTW, if you're worried about scope failure, you could always buy a second set of rings and another scope.  Zero it and keep it handy just in case. Let us know what you decide and how ya like it!
